A few dollars will get you a dfzen Portraits, which can be distributed among a dozen friends, giving more pleasure for the money than anything else obtainable. In the larger sizes we have the Duchess, Panel or the Re- gina for $5, the dozen. Then wo have the dainty little Corona and the popular Karillo, at $3, the dozen. Our new Panel at $2.50 the dozer, is bound to be popular with those who do not care for a large Portrait. These are ovals, squares or panels, according to desire, and at the -prices are about the price of Christmas Cards. No sum less than one thousand dollars is recorded, and the reader is left to imagine how many such dona'ions and bequests there'ha.ve been, and how great- their total sum. The Tribune‘s record off generous gifts and the ohjectsto which they were devoted isa most interesting one. The sums range 1'ro:n $1,000 up to $5,000,000 each. Their aggregate during the year was $62,461,304. The year 1899 has been even more fruitful in generous giving and made at total of $70,749,050. In fact if we take the records of seven years past the wealthy and generous citizens of the United States have made a. yearly average total of over 40 millions a. year in these special gifts to educational institutions.!ibraries, charitics and religious enterprises. It is truly a noble record, and we believe is without a. parallel in any other country. ~' During the year 1900 these special bequests and donations were divided as follows: Educational Institutions S34,932.6i4 Charities 13,621,722 Churches 8,800,6t'5 Museums 8: Art Galleries 2,145,333 Libraries 2,901,000 Among the greatest of these offerings were the following: Samuel Cupples aud R. A. Brookings of St. Louis, $5,000,000 to Washington University; Ar_1drew` Carnegie gifts to Pittsburg for institute I and library, $3,600,000; Robert H. Brigham, Boston, will to charities, $2,989.000; Jonas G. Clark, Worcester Mass, will to Clark University,$2,359,0J0; John D.I-Iockefeller, gifts to,University of Chicago, $2,150,060; aniel S. Ford, Boston, churches, $1,150,- 033. As many more range between the half million and the million mark. The above are donations to single objects. In several cases the same donors have given liberally in other ways. For instance, Mr. Carnegie, in addition to his more than` princely gift to the Pittsburg Institute give to 19 libraries from $3,000 toj$50,000 each, making $84-5.000 for libraries alone. In 1893 he gave over three and a. half millions for 31 libraries. A hundred years ago the number of millionaires in the whole world was com- paratively few. The millionaircs of America were fewer than the like class in Canada today. 'There has been during the century an enormous increase of wealth l in the hands of individuals, and it is most gratifying to note that with the growth of wealth has come an approximately equal growth of the sense of responsibility which attaches to opulence, and a great enlargement in the way ofgenerous giving l for public uses. Canada containslbut about l y one fifteenth part of as many people as f the Republic, and proportionately less wealth, but there are still a number of men in the Dominion who have been rich enough and generous enough each to givol in the agg'regatc,a million and upwards in donations for the gool of their fellow` men. We regret that precise informa- there were more of these generous donations in Canada within the last decade of the century than in any twenty years before. This is a hopeful fcaturc, und, (not forgetting t-he lesson ofthe widows mite), we trust that the men of great wealth in Canada may continue to emulate the noble examples set by the opulent citizens of the Great Republic beside us. l 1-A01.; Gain by Krugefs Absence. ]From the Pliiladelpliial Public Le `ger. \Vhen Kruger left.
