tragedy, or perhaps it was a tragedy
that really became a comedy, was en-
acted in the Lyceum on the night of
the election.
The Grits. in goodly number,” and in
various stages of exuberance, were
congregated together to receive the
election returns as they were being
flashed on a blackboard by the ready
_chalk of the party artist. The returns
came spasmodically and at every
spasm the hopes and the fears of the
faithful were registered in howls of
idelight or in a stillness that became
painfully thick in the tobacco smoke
and other fumes incident to a Grit love
feast before or after an election. Fin-
ally the returns indicated that if the
riding of Caledonia turned out as the
assembled celebrants wished. Mr F. J.
Nash. One of the Grit candidates for
the Belfast District, would be elected.
In the suspense that followed this
announcement hope. variously stimu-
lated, became an assurance and Mr
Nash was by the unanimous voice of
the assemblage declared elected. The
declaration was followed by the usual
demonstrations of wild delight. The
most enthusiastic jumped on such
tables as were avaliable, everybody
stood on his chair or on that of his
neighbor and the welkin-they always
have a well-tin at these performances-
rang out on the midnight air. Mr
Nash saw his opportunity for a trium-
phant speech. He began to think with
fearful velocity, and with Mr Nash to
think is to act. Sometimes he can do
both at once. and this was one of the
times. He mounted the rostrum and
in a speech of the wildest eloquence
that lie ever perpetrated he accepted
the honour conferred upon lilm by his
“ good friends of Belfast" and pro-
ceeded to enumerate the reforms he
would introduce when he became the
occupant of one of the seats of the
mighty. and he gracefully parted his
coattaiis in aiiticipatloii of that aus-
picious event. _
in the midst of his reform pro-
gramme the cry rang out, "Returns
from Caledonia! " Silence was called
for and the silence and the figures
came together. When the silence
came Mr Nasli’s hand was still in the
air, as was also his hat which had
been doing the gesticulating for him.

when the figures were announced.
which put him in a minority by eigh-
teen votes, the hat and the hand and
Mr Nash came down together in a
heap like this.
