Here is the letter from the doctor to Mr. Justice Fitzgerald: B. E. F., 18th May, 1917. Dear Fitzgerald.- I have to say that my young friend Lieutenant C. S. Mar-.Kenzle is kill- ed. i have no further particulars. as he was- not at the time in my' division. For nearly two years he was in my company and I came to know him well as one gets to know a man at the front. He was ii good soldier. ,sense. honest. faithful, diligent, pa- tient. trustworthy, brave. By men and officers he was respected and beloved. Since he took a commission ,tl have not seen much of him. but l (hear that' he coijtinued to display "those qual-ities which endeared him to us. He had a linppy life: now he has,an honorable death. There is ‘nothing to lament. In this war es- pecially ono is inclined to say “Blessed are thp dead." As I write 1 am remindiad that the first day I went In the trenches. lt was he who was with nie. l hope when you seo my sympathy. ' Ever yours faithfully.
