Woodman, Spare that Tree Woodman, spare that tree | Touch pot a single bough, In youth it sbelter’d me, And Ili protect it now ; T'was my forefathers hand That placed it near this cot ; There, woodmar, let it stand, Thy axe shall harm it not, The oid femiliar tree, Whose glory and renown Ave spread o'er land and sea. And would’st thou hack it down ° Woodman, forbear thy stroke ! Cut not its earth bound ties ; Oh, spare that aged oak Now towering to the skies ! When but an idle boy, I sought its grateful shade; In all their gushing joy, Here, too, my sister play’d, My mother kissed me here, My father press'd my hand, Forgive this foolish tear, But let that old oak stand. My heart-strings round thee cling Close as thy bark, old frieod; Here shall the wild birds siug, And still thy branches bend, Old tree, the storms still brave ! And woodman leave the spot; While I’ve a hand to save, Thy axe shall harm it not. a —— > 2 a + There are thirty-three ‘‘ railroad schools” in Russia for the instruction of employes, established because not very leng ago it was impossible to get Russians with educa- tion emdugh to be intrusted with the higher places, and even at this day one- half ef all the locomotive engineers in Russia are Germans. Twenty years ago, of four road masters on a line about twenty-five miles long, two did not knoy their letters, and had clerks to write their reports, The schools turn out chiefly enginemen and firemen, road masters and telegraphers, most of them sons of railruad employes. The eourse of study extends over three years, with a two years’ “‘ prac tice course’ in some cases. Two schools ere hardly yet out of the experimental stage. One of the oldest, founded in 1874, bas so far twenty-five graduates in railroad service.
