' [Passed April 19, lStL0.] I E it enacted by the Administrator of the Government, Council and Assembly, as follows :— , ' I. ' The Colonial Secretary of this Island and the Commissioner of Public Lands, for the time being, and three other persons to be appointed by the present or other Administrator of the Government, for the time being, in Council, shall, under thenameof“’l‘he Board of Works,” constitute a Board for the superintendence and management of the Colonial Building, Govern- ment House, Light Houses, Jails, ljuoys and Beacons, Public Highways, Bridges, Wharves and Breakwaters, and of all other Buildings, Erect/ions and property now belonging to, or which shall or may hereafter belong to the Government" ot' this Island. II. The Road Correspondent, for the time be- ing, shall be the Secretary or Clerk to the said 'Board, and shall receive such salary in addition to his present salary allowance, as the Board shall assign'to him, not exceeding twenty-five pounds per annum. III.- The repairs, erection, performance and completion of all'l‘ublic Buildings or Works, and the purchase of Oil, and all othernecessary supplies or materials for Lighthouses, Jails, or other public purposes, shall, in all cases, be offered for public Competition after having been first duly advertiz’ed, and be done wherever practicable,by public letting, tender or contract, under the supervision of the Board of Works. IV. The Board of Works shall meet in Char- lottetown, on the first Tuesday in every month, and oftener, when necessary, for the transaction of the business of the department; and three members shall constitute a quorum. V. Each member of the Board shall receive Twenty pounds yearly for his services, and six- ence for every mile travelled to attend meet~ ings of the Board, or necessarily trawlled in the performance of his duties by travelling The latter charge to be submitted and approved of by the Administrator of the Government in GAZETTE. 705 iCouncil. The salary of each member to be sub- ;ject to a deduction of one pound thirteen shil- lings and four-pence, for every time he shall be absent lrom any monthly sitting of the Board, without sufficient excuse. VI. The Lieutenant GOVG‘RIIO‘B, or other Ad- ministrator of the Government, for the time ‘being, in Council, may appoint a general Super- intendent or Surveyor of Public Works, Roads, lBridges and V-Vharves, in each County in this Island; and the Superintendent f'or Queen’s County, shall receive a salary of one hundred and titty pounds per annum, and each Superin- tendent for King’s and Prince Counties, the sum of one hundred and twenty pounds each,per annum, including travelling: expenses, which said salaries shall be paid by. warrant on the public Treasury, drawn quarterly, in the usual 'manner. ' VII. The said three Superintendents shall be under the order and direction of the Board of Works ; and shall ea’eh'furnish at least once in every quarter of the year, at such times or oftener, as the Said Board shall require for their information, a report of the ccnditio‘n of the Public Works and buildings within their re‘ spective counties, and offer suggestions for the improvement of such works and buildings, which report shall be-annua-lly» laidbefore each branch of the Legislature, within. ten days after the commencement of the session. ' - ‘ . VIII. The" Commissioners, Overseers, and other officers of Highways, appointed or to be appointed under the several Statutes of this Island, new or hereafter to be in force, in re- lation to Highways, shall have the s‘ame'powers, duties and emoluments j‘as heretofore, within their respective (listriCts or precincts; neverthe— less. they shall be under the general supervision of the Board of Works, and obey all orders and instructions which they may receive from said Board, relating to their respective duties ; and such Commissioners shall report annually, on the thirty-first day of January in each year, to the Board of Works, as to the state and condi- tion of the Roads, Bridges and‘Wharves, with- in their respective district-s. , IX. The Board of Works shall have power at any time, if they deem it advisable, to take under their exclusive charge and management, any particular part, piece or pieces of any public Highways, or any particular Wharf, Bridge or Public Work, in the said Island, and the ex~
