In the first months of married life, love is so sufficient, and loving so simple, that there seems no other need life. Eut by-and-by, when care egins to shadow them, when duties present themselves, and, strangely enough, conflict with each other, when convictions clash and tastes differ, then both husband and wife begin to realize that back of love must stand what I have called ‘steady moral qualities’— justice, patience, honesty, sincerity and magnanimity. Indeed, on these depends the very continuance of love n marriage, for it is not possible to go unless that is found which is I say this advisedly. » le ying y of love I know the world is full of men and women who think, either because they like to think so, or sadly, because they must, that one can love where one does 1ot respect. It seems to me that this does not enaqle one’s ideal of love. One may pity, may have an infinite yearning tenderness over what one can respect, but love is of royal birth and recognizes only what is as royal as itself. The way, then, to keep love secure in married life is not so much to be anxiously watching and guarding lest it should escape, or crying that love has spread its wings because the first holiday romance is rep'aced by graver feeling, but by liv— ing along simply and honestly and frankly together on a high plane, look- ing most and always toward ‘whatso— ever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsowever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, what- soever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report.’ Then Love will be not a captive, but a most will- ing guest,” A WIFE SHOULD INSISTON AN ALLOW- ANCE I wish here to emphasize the fact which so many husbands and wives seem to forget—that marriage is on one side as much a business contract as any other partenership, and demands exactly the same business treatment. The husband is the earner, the wife is the distributor, of capital, and of the two her work is really the more com— plex and difficult. The only way to carry on this business partenership successfully in a financial way, and without friction personally, is to put it on acash basis. It is right that the wife should insist upon having an allow- ! ance. I think the reluctance with which many a man looks upon giving an allowance to his wife comes not so much from a selfish and sordid love of the money itself, as from real mis— trust of a woman’s ability to handle it! wisely. He, foolish man, doubts her knowing the value of a dollar because she has never earned one.—Helen Watterson Moody in Ladies’ Home Journal. How to Treat a Cut, Adhesive plaster ought to be the best procurable, and instead of keep— ing it ina roll in the drawer it ought to be cut into strips of different breadths. It is thus ready for im- mediate use, and there is no chance of it sticking together as it does if kept in bulk. When it,is necessary to use this plaster to keep the edges of the wound together, we must be careful first and foremost to see that the wound is perfectly clean, and that no sand, glass or grit is in it, which would cause festering and prevent it from healing. Never cover a wound wholly up with piece of plaster; whatever be its size use long narrow strips. Warm the plaster by holding the back of it against a can of boiling water for a few seconds, then apply it across the wound, leaving a small space between Farm For Sale 166 acres at Dundas We offer for sale 100 acres of land at Upton, Dundas, formerly occupied by Avgus McPherson. 75 acres clear and in good heart, the re mainder under mixture of bard ands o wood, All excellent soil. Remember that sticking plaster has no healing action in itself, and the benefits derived from its use are of a purely mechanical nature. Clean cuts are better bound up with blood, simply witha linen rag, for sticking plaster is of no use until the bleeding stops. In case of scalp wounds, the hair must be shaved off before the plaster is applied.— Medical Journal. Duties to Our Humble Servants. There is scarcely any part of the body as sensitive and appreciative as the feet, but like the English “slavy” or lodging-house drudge, they are al- ways “ put upon” and never complain. They are really just as tender as the hands, though having been covered from infancy with hard leather and ill- fitting hose, they have grown used to limited space and care. The bones are very delicate and beautiful, the pores very iarge and absorbent, and the whole surface full of nerves. They should be kept, nails and all, as clean and soft as the hands, then the skin would seldom harden into uncomfortable —_ thickness.—Harper’s Bazar.
