. Mr. wright, who was known near THE _ CHARIJOTTETOWN’ GUARDIAN MARCH ,3. 19,36 ' (B! I'll!) COOK) GIANTS and jESTERS a In Public Life (Collyflflit Reserved) was nun or ma osrinasu A little over three miles up the Gatineau river from its 9p];- flenoe with the Ottawa, a mile be- low the r liarnent ““ s, there g a classical seminary for adoles- eent youth, known as the College oi -5t, Alexandre. It is conducted by the Fathers oi the Congregation of um Holy Ghost, a Trench teaching M order. The seminary was established in 1005 as an w‘ ‘ collate. par- ticularly for the youth oi old prance who intended settling in the Dominion, but as such. lt had not much success. Accordingly in 1911 it was converted into a classical school, and since that time has made remarkable progress and has acquired a deservedly high repu- tation throughout Eastern Canada and the New England states. The school building is an impos- ing brick structure, with wide lawns glcplng down to the swift flowing G-atineau. Absorbed into the build- ing is the old homes-end "Iron- sides," of the original prcprietor, Colonel Alonzo wiugnt, lUl‘ twenty- four years member oi the House of Commons for the county of 0t- tawa, at that time the largest con- stituency, in point ct area, in the Dominion. ' “ and far as the "King of the uatin- cau" was a grandson of Philemon wright, the first white settler in the Ottawa district. Philemon had a large iamny, all of whom clustered around the head of the clan, who had located in wnat is now the city of Hull in lbOI). Alonzo, who was a soil of Colonel ‘IIDBIIUS Wright, was born there in ‘Fcbzuary, i305. l-le received a good education, then went into the lumber business, as did others of the iamiiy, but having inspirations for POUMCJ ne was elect- ed in the Conservative interest to the legislature of Old Canada in 1862, and held his seat for the home county until 1857. Then came the first Dominion election. The "King living so near the iederal capital decided to transfer to the House oi Commons if the electors would per- mit him, and when nomination day was over he was a member of the first Parliament oiCanada by ac- clamatlon. Mr. Wright was short of stature, and. like many other mentwhom I have met possessing this physical characteristic, was the very cmbonl- ment of good nature. His great de- light was to entertain his brother members of Parliament, irrespec- tive of their political affiliations, members of the press gallery and other friends. At his Gatimau home‘ dispensed bountiful hospi- tality. Many a story was carried to distant parts of Canada oi the royal times enjoyed at "Ironsides." The Ottawa county member did not trouble the House with many lheeches, but when it was known that Alonzo was "up," the chamber filled yapidly. There win a musical rhythm in his voice and a grace and culture in his style which few men in Parliament in my day, o: even since, could emulate. His wealth of language and classical quotations betokened the scholar. On one occasion he outdid himself. His closing address of the session of i883. which I had the pieasure of reporting, went through Canada as one of the best things ever heard in Parliament. For some years there had been friendly rivalry between Mr. James TTOW. chief Liberal whip, and Mr. WTlKllt, as to which should have the "last. say" of the session. When all the business oi Parliament had been trui acted and the Common- ers were waiting for the summons to the Sen te Chamber to hear His Excellenc ‘s farewell message. It would be a struggle between these two veterans to catch the Speaker's eye. Generally Mr. Trow got the honcrg‘ as a matter of fact 1 think some sessions it was prearranged. For five or ten minutes the mem- bei- for South Perth would "josh" Ylllle ministerial benches urimerci- fuliy but always in a kindly spirit. However, o the occasion I have in mind (M 25. 1883), the two ment- bers had reached an understanding that Mr. Wright was to have the floor, for a particular sermon. ‘For some years Ottawa had been honored by the presence during the parliamentary session of Miss Mao- Dllerllon. the charming daughter of Sir David Macphmzon, who was Speak-er cf the Senate from i880 to 1888, andthen minister oi‘ the interior until i885. Mix; Macplier- son was one of the most attractive looking ladies I have ever seen- Tall, of regal bearing, and always immaculately gowried. she was ever the central figure at the different litter“ in Toronto, where she wag -- oi Gov" ‘ House from 1882 t0.l897. . The Hon. G. A. Kirkpatrick. My: for Frontenac. llad been elected speaker of the house at the begin- llllls of the session. and it was but 1°58 before members and" news- llllpermen noticed that Mr Speaker "ll-ll iiflyllls great attention to Miss ,“ rsi l. Later it. was generally understood that they were engagui to be married, although there had been no official announcement. Well‘, on the closing day of Par- liament, Mr. Wright, as 1 say, took the floor just before prorogation and proceeded to shower upon Mr. Speaker the klndliest euloglcs I ‘have ever heard addressed to a public man. Remem‘ that this was Mr. Kirkpatricks first session in the chair. The “King" was in fine form. In opening his remarks he said before the Usher of the Black Rod gave his three knocks. before that pleasant little raven from the Upper Shamber. came tap- ping at the door he had been re- rgrested by a number of members oi the House to say a few words con- cerning the manner in which the Speaker has discharged the impor- tant duties devolving upon him during thesession. Mr. Wright con- tinued: "When we heard you read the solemn service with which we begin our proccdlngs. we thought a great mistake had been made ‘when you devoted yourself to the law in- stead of the gospel. to the evil in- stead o! the gDOd. But, sir. we had to bow to the inevitable, and born as you were. under the shadow oi the old fort of Frontenac; born. as you were. under the shadow of that great. penal institution, where justice presents its malevolent rather than its benevolent aspects. we all felt assured that wren you were selected by the Conlmons to perform the important duties oi the office you hold, you would discharge them with a singular gruc and wonderful charm-and I am free to ' confess thntour expectations int-c not been disappointed. Members on both sides will agree with me that in all respects you have performed your duties in a manner to win commendation from all sorts and conditions of men. "But, Mr wright "while you have not been guilty of any sins of commision, 1 fear we must charge you with a sin of om- misslcn. We had reason to expect that the monotony of our parlia- mentary life would have been reliev- ed by a pleasant and an agreeable change. We thought that we would continued. hear the rustling oi divinity, the fluttering oi angelic wings. and the cclor of violets and orange flowers in our passages and corridors. But sir, a word to the wise is sufficient; and as an emlncnt wrltcr says, ‘It is never to late to mend.’ We trust this matte,- wiil be mended before we mc-ct again another session. “Sir. you have occupied a very distinguished position. You remind us of that picture by a great French artist which depicts the Deluge. On a vast rock in the midst of a great expanse of waters, was seated a noble and distinguished figure. not unlike your own, who looked down on the struggling swimmers below. You have seen the struggles of the two parties; you have seen the ebb and flow of political life; the fierce assaults of my hon. fit-ends of the opposition on the serricd ranks of their opponents. and you have heard the cry oi many a staunch swimmer in his agony, who went down in the terrible gulf-who. commencing his political life. found that in this arena, above all others, the prin- ciple of the survival of the fittest prevails. But, sir. you have borne the criticism oi your friends as well as your enemies. which proves al- ways the existence of the highest statecraft. In all respects you deserve the highest commendation at the hands of you; countrymen: and we trust that when the period arrives, which comes to Speakers as well as to men in meaner organiza- tions, when you will be exalted into the political arena-we hope then, that transferred to another sphere, you will pass you time in studying, patiently parliamentary problems and curious constitutional questions s0 that you may enjoy the utmost happiness consistent with the state of things here below. I am sure I ex- press the opinion of every member in saying we hope when that time arrives. you will have so ccmported yourself in saying. “Well done, good and faithful speaker, enter thou into the new govcrnorshlp, collec- torshlp, or JudZP-‘lhlil. Pwliflred 301' you from the beginning of this Par- llament." Mr. Kirkpatrick was more than cmbnrrasssd.
