Who quarrel and grumble? Who are bruised for nothing? Who have bleary eyes? Tho who linger over the bottle, thos who relish blended wines. So look not on the wine so red, that sparkles in the cup. It glides down smoothly at first. but in the end it bites like any snake, stings you like an adder." (Moi- mus Trznrislation). Starvation Overseas. Henry W. Grady. a great American orator, once said of the liquor traffic. "It comes to snatciuthe crust from the lips of tho starving child.” This appears to'be literally true today. On May 14th the papers reported that about 31,456 cases of choice Scotch landed in Canada. On May 22nd from 8,000 to 10.000 c-isea landed in B. C. With millions of children starving in Europe and Old Land is exmrti-ng liquor made out of the grain which might have fed many o! their hungry dying children. The International Record for April reports the British M'n- lster of Food as stating that. the brewers in the United Kingdom used 750.000 tons of grain for the year ending September 30th. i945, and it ls estimated that 814000 inns will be used in 1946. The United Kingdom di-stlllers used 100.000 tons of grain during i945 and will use it is estimated 130.- 000 tons in 1046. The Canada Year Book (i046) reveals that 456,571,581 pounds of grain were used in i944 in Canada in the manufacture of liquor. and tone of molasses were also ueel te produce the liquor. The liquor traffic is a ravenous beast devouring the food which would have kept thousands of children alive in thefamine strick- en areas of Europe. but ll uor drinkers demanded their dr nk. How can any one drink liquor to- day made out of the life blood o! little children, I am reminded of the story of David in II Samuel. Chapter M. who was shut off from Bethlehem by a Philistlne srrison and said longlmglyi "Oh l some mic would | only give me‘ a drink from the well of Bethlehem." Three of his brave i followers broke through the Phil- istinc lines, drew some water from i the Well at Bethlehem and ' brou ht it to David, but he would I not rink it. He ured it an the [ground and crie, "God forbid that I should do it. this is the ' blood o! the men who went at the I risk of their lives." SO HE WOULD N01‘ DRINK. Shall men an | women drink of the blood oi m- tle children, whore food was made iinto liquor to satlsf the everice of brewer: and dletllere and the evil craving of drinkers. We shall not drink. new: the high minded normal man and women. for- bids that X should do. GANGBTII IUIII hr a recent article in "Guardian" the following menu were mess with reference touthe food situation in lumps: thl down in nine ounces d lhtlltltlllglllay," - ml. utlte- this tirely dependent on the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration." “Italy -’I\ivo pounds of bread, cost MM 0n the ‘black market’. ‘Aadgguate black market meals cost "Yugoslavia -Five million people rely entirely on UNRRA. In many places the only food available is three slices of bread a day." etc, ets. In the face of this appalling situation. the Government still per-mm the brewers to waste. and worse than waste. vast. quantities of grain in the production of liq— uid poison. While people o-f other countries are perishing for lack of bread, these gentlemen are tak- ing the grai-n to poison their own countrymen and make money fc-r themselves. One cannot conceive how any human being could he so callous and unfeeling. The eo e as a whole submit to the rat on ng of butter. sugar. and without complaint. they give their garments to the National Clothing Collection and do what they can to su ort the Red Cross and oth- er re f agencies; and now_ii is suggested that bread be rationed. Bread is the staff of life and Jze main diet of the poor. Does it not seem rather s cowardly ex- pedient to take the bread from the mouths oi the poor while the brewer: are allowed to waste enor- mous quantities of grain in older to line their own pockets and in- dulge the rich in their “little drop"? - _ What nation that carries on in this fashion can expect to prosper and what can we expect from a Government that breaks the laws of the country and illegally passes amendments? People talk about iebiscites re-, gardi-ng Daylight aving, titer m", as if they didn't realize that‘ a plebiscite means nothing to our‘ Government. In such things they are ruled by the liquor inter-cits. We want Justice. We want a. government that will be ruled hyi the wishes of the majority and} will not be influenced by a degen~ erate minority. - —EDITH STBRNS Address And true qaarmorrsroww ooannuuv The starter‘: in . . .
