TRADE AND BPADE. ——u-- I! CKLILII ILCKAY. Bstvre_eri two friends, in days of old, A bitter aoife began, And Patber Spade with Brother Trade Disputed man to man: “You're vain, uodutiful and proud," Said Spade with lashing eyes, “ You earn your thousands while Istarve, You mock my children's cries, You ride in state with lordl looks, You dwell in bow’r and all; You speak of me rcproachfully, And prosper at my fall. So, from this It--ur, in shine or sbow'r. We'll learn to live apart, I rul'd the earth, erc you were born; I cut you fiotu my heart." And Trade lost temper in his pride, Ila utter’d words of scorn; " You do not know the ways of men, Aiiiid your sheep ud corn. You doze away the busy day, Nor think how tuiiiutes run; Go. put your shoulder to your vrorlr, And do us I have done; Ycu’ve all the earth to yield you wealth, Both corn and pasture land; I only ask a counting house, And roorit whoreon to Ifatttl. And, from this hour, in shine or show‘r, I’l| learn to live alone; I'll do without you well enough- The world iiliall be my own!" And thus they wrangled night and day. Unfair. like ailgry iiieii, ‘Till things went wrong between them both, And would not right again. But growing wiser in distress, Each grasp’d the other‘s hand- “ ‘Twas wrong,” said Spade, “to rail at Trade, He loves tile in the land." And Trade as freely own'd his fault-— "I have been uiiiuat," he said "To quarrel with tile good old man Who grows my daily bread. Long may we Ilourisli, Trade and Spade, In city and in plain! The people starve while we dispute, We must not part again." And all the people sang for joy, Tosee their good accord, While Spade iisseiiibled all his soul, And piled his ploiiteous board. He fed them on the Lest of fure— UuLix'd the liniiiiiiig ulc- Anil pray’d in ling!:inil‘s li:ippy shore, 'I'liat Trude iiiiglit never t'.iil. Ecorroaiv is Doll 10 Ouit EMPt.ovizits.—" Waste not, want not,” is a good Oltl proverb ." He that is faithful in little h faithful also in much." A person who takes no cars of the materials commited to his hand by his master. will never duly husband his own property. Economy and wastefulncss are habits that will influence us in all things, both when we are engaged about our own substance and that of another. To waste another's goods is the same as to rob him. The loss in both cases is equal, and the principles whence they spring very much alilre.—'I‘be man who takes care oi his employer's goods is sure to look aft»-r his own, and thus is on the road to rosperity. It would be dilficolt to calculate the immense use of property tltat every year occurs from carelessness and want oft-cooomy. Some persons are worth nearly h ilf their wages more than others, because they never injure nor waste anything. The employer being wealthy. or the stock abun- dant, is no excuse for carelessness. A loss is a loss, and a robbery is a roboery, whether taken from the heap of the miser or the smaller store of the indigent. “ Gather up the frag- ments, that Iltllllllifl he lost," is a divine command. Heaven ellows nothing to be destroyed. There has not been a single drop of water wasted from the creation until now. The ile- composetl elements of last autumn are the ailment of oilr pre- sent spring. Economy, rigid economy, is one of the laws of nature; slid we shall not realize “ the good time ct-mini" ml- til we have a careful and economical world. Let this spirit prevail, and not only will the master be saved from loss, but in many instances, the servant will rescue himself from the IIlII0lI- Rsriituo CONVEIIATMN AT arr Eviinmc PAnvrv'—.‘lIi'ss _t/clots —“You have lravelledthrtiunh foreign countries with- in the last five years, Mr. Albrane, have you not?” Mr. Al5rcne.—“ Ah. yes, I've been so much along ’em that I almost feel sometimes as if I was it foreigner myself.” Miss Ryrlow.—" Can you tell us, Mr. Albiane, what you saw in foreim countries?” Mr. Albrane.—‘°l\len and things, Miss Ryelow; men and things.
