Taking as his text: ' Nevertheless I am not aahamed."- l saidz-“I suiler", said Paul. That to mention trifling inconvenienou. That meant something more bitter and starkly cruel than we can real- ize. Home was pressing her inn heel down on the apostle. Iibt two years he had been allowed some liberty, some consideration, some privileges. , ‘rho Romans kept him prisoner. but it was a mild and easy imprison- ment. It is even coniacturcd that he was liberated, and enabled for a period to pursue his missionary lab- ors. But this time there was no such latitude. Rome had come to hate Christianity. The Christians had been accused of abominable crimes. They were accused of setting fire to the city. And so they had been wr- ‘turcd at the stake and dung-to wild beasts. Nero's gardens had been i1- lumlnated one terrible night by human torches. 8o, when Paul was dragged back to Home, it was to be thrust into a foul dungeon and treated like a common criminal chained with rasping and heavy irons. And upon that ignominy was heaped hate, and, if not hate, at any rate contempt and ridicule for what he stood for. Added to that fered scorn. hatred, loneliness, mis- understanding. He suflcrod indus- tice. He suflcred from the know- ledge that things were not going old friends who had taken the vow with him years before, and who were now traitors to that vow. What could we do, or say, or annmmcement that a delegation bearing grooiinsa awaited us ‘from that Church? If that latter had not come we would have received them without hesitation. Even as it was there was a disposition to give a ocsdial welcome. We hesitated, re- covering breath, and pondered. Can j you wonder; Then the matter was refuse to hear the delegation. We asked time to consider the situation as is the Presbyterian custom. And than before we could do so the dal- eslticn was withdrawn. Then all over the country there arose the chorus of disapproval lead by cer- tain cheap and unthinking news- papers that here .was a bigoted Church, a narrow Church, a hating Church. en unchristian Church-a Church that indeed deserved to be called a cuit'of Anti-Christ. Love means action and we must be ready to serve our fellow men st all times. "And he believed in the Lord, and he counted it to him for righteous"- ness," formed the basis of a splen- did sermon Sunday morning. The speaker said in these days there is searching of hearts to find the cause of the upset and many coh- feasions are being made. 5o many were looking for profits, no matter how they were made.
