Formelly Presented to the Church Trustees _ by _Frnnk Heertz » ¢ An event which will long be re- membered in the history of the Meth- odist Church in this Province took _place last night, the occasion being the formal opening of the new Sun- day School and Hall, known us 'the Hearts Memorial Hall, which has bccn crectcd as a lasting ir.onnn\eut to the memory of the late Benjamiii Heartz. ' Many who saw lust evening for the first time thc interior of this fine building were surprised and delighted with its beautiful appearance and splendid appoiiitinelits. UD0u the platform were seated Rev I~I.' E. Thomas, who presided, Rev W. H. Hcartz, 1). li., I¢‘i~nnk Il. Heartz, Rev William Harrison, and the trustees of the Chllrcli. The exercises were opened by the singing of a hymn and a prayer by Rev Mr Harrison. '1"he first iiiusical selection on the program was a voi- liu solo by Miss Shaw, whose ability in this particular lille so demonstrat- ed itself as to bring forth an encore which could not but be responded to. Rev Mr Thomas; in his opening re- marks, said that he was sure every- one rejoiced that this hour, so long and anxiously looked for, had come. He thought that the building was nll that could he desired as far as ap- pointments and beauty of structure were concerned and thiit_it could not be improved upon in any way. “ln looking back,” he said, “many names occur to as being of those who have labored in connection with the Church, and into whose-rich heritage we have entered; and among them is the name we have met to honor to- night." He then culled upon Frank Il. Heartz, to whom he said the thanks of the members of the con- gregation were largely due for the erection of the building. Mr Heartz, in a happy speech, said that his public utterances had in the past been confined to the political rostrum, and he'had never aspired so high as to expect to be called up- on to address an audience from the pulpit ofa Sunday School. He ex- plained that when his late grand-. father, Richard Heartz nmde his lal-ii; will and testament, after making cer- tain specific bequests, he desired tliat the rest and resld`ue of his property should be divided into four' equal iparts, he having- at one time four children. Three of these parts went to his surviving children 'and the fourth part was used for the purpose of establishing this Memorial Hall. He said that the Ladies Aid Society of the Church had at,that time three lor four thousand dollars collected for the purpose of building a Sunday School, but as it was to be ln' the nature of ii. memorial, to heal' the Hearts name, lie decided to pay the balance, some live or six thousand dollars, himself. (applallse.) He explained that the Hearts don~ ation asa memorial was the build- ing itself, the rand having been giv- en by the Church, the three seats and lectern on the platform by Dr Heartz, 'Mrs Dr Taylor and Mrs Perkins, and thc bible by James Dalling, City. H0 thanked the mem- bers of the committee, Messrs Weeks, Paton, Smith and Rev Mr 'I’llolnni-1,; for suggestions and ideas received in connection with the erection of the building, and added that their co-op- eration had been a source of greni. pleasure to him. Hc congratulated Rev Mi' Thomas on the unprecedent- ed number of lmproveincnts which had taken place in the Church pro- perty during his lncumbency and thought l.Iin.t C. I3. Chappelle, the architect, Lowe lirotliers, the con- tractors, und others connected with the construction of the building, de- served commendation for the man- ner in which the work was carried ollt. Rev Mr Thomas said that it would always be qi pleasure for him to look back upon the pleasant associa- tions tlint had existed as between himself, as chairman of the Commit- tee, and Mr Hcartz, and he thoilullt that in saying`tlils he voiced the sentiment of the other members ol the committee, as well as the trus- tees. swln nn cu.
