This special shipment is direct from the Museum of Art and Manufactures, Japan, comprising very rare and curious art objects, &e., together with numerous articles of general utillty. The whole has been selected and catalogued by an expert of much ex eenee, and forms, in its ensemble, a most valuable selection of Japanese curiosities and manufactures. The shipment includes many articles admirably adapted for complimentary presentation. —--®}---— A Nakxnxow Escarpe.—Monday's express train from Halifax had a narraw escape when oréssing the Polleigh Mountain. When be- tween Polleizh and Wentworth stations, the engine struck a quantity of mud and rock, which had rolled down the mountain side, The pilot was smashed and four trucks of the thrown from the rails, the drivers remainin, iu position. The train was delay- ed an hour and a half in consequence. The place where the accident occurred is known as flat slope, with the mountain on one side of the track aad the valley on the other. Postmaster Brecken, a few days ago, re- ceived the following letter which speaks for itself To the Postmaster, Charlottetown, P. E£. I.: Six,—A young man named Edward Kelly, die at Grand Forks, on the 17th September last. He was from Charlottetown, P. E. I. I was first acquainted with him in Manitoba, Where he lived several years before coming here. He was working harvesting with me when he took sick of fever ahd died ina week's time. | took him tg the hospital here aud did al] [ could ta help him, I buried him decently, paid hospital and doctors fees, and saw that he had his clergy before he died, I could not obtain the address of his people, he died so yuickly. He told me his people lived near Charlottetown, He was a man about five feet, nine inches in height and weighed about two hundred pounds. I think he told me his father’s name was Patrick Kelly, and that his father was Irish and his mother Scotch. Show this letter to his father if you can find him ; if not have it put in the papers. Fahey still claims that he is being persecuted. — French Politics. Parts, Dee. 13. President Carnot’s message was submit- ted to the Chambers to-day. He advocates a policy of concord and appeasement, and urges the adoption of practical reforms for the improvement of the finances. He says the Chambers, in assisting the Government, will execute a programme which will give Europe the precious pledge of France’s ardent desire to contribute to the consoli- dation of general peace, and facilitate the development of good foreign relations. The boy Robert Welsh, aged 14 years, has been committed for trial at the Su- preme Court for killing Clifford at Trure, and Mrs, Kent, Clifford’s paramour,who advised the boy to mix the shot with salt, and fire, has been jailed as an acceggary, Obituary, Hanrax, Dec. 13. THe members of the committee which was formed some time ago to promote the establishment of an Industrial School, or Reformatory, in Charlottetown, are still im- pressed with the urgent necessity of such an institution; but up to the present date only a smal] sum, now in the Savings Bank, has been collected towards the necessary funds for commencing operations. The Bank book being in Mrs. Edward Palmer’s possession. The local Government has already pre- vided a certain aniwunt in this direction, to be appropriated bythe Stipendiary Mag- istrate at his discretion, when youthful offeuders are brought before him. Dona- tions to this fund, sent in from various parts of the Island, would, with the above named syms, quickly establish this much needed and inexpensive enterprise, During the winter months there are always idle tradesmen and women to be found, who could, for a small amount, teach these boys and girls various useful occupations, which ought to include some branches of housework.
