FOR SALE. rQ*uyE SUBSCRIBERS, intending to remeve | Friday evening last, to take iuto considera tion the proposed tax upon Real Estate and Income. After the usual preliminaries and several excellent and telling speeches had beca made, the following resolutions were put and unanimously carried :— 1, Resolved, That in view of the present strenuous opposition ef the landlords to the proposed tax by the Civic Council of Charlottetown on Real Estate and the the Civic Coaneil, we, the tenants, form | ourselves into a league for the protection |of the tenants’ rights, to be called the | ** Tenants’ Right League.” 2. Whereas, We, the tenants, have, by pay- ing a tax of ten and twelve per cent. on an }exorbitant rent enabled the City of Char- | lottetewn to lay platforms, open up strecia, | purchase fire engines, house, ete.,¢o pro- | tect the property of landlords, and to make | more valuable the same ; |} Resolved Therefore, That we give our un- ‘divided support to the Civic Council whe jhave had the courage and maaliness to | place one aud a quarter per cent. on Real | Estate. ; | 3. Whereas, Certain landlords are en- 'deavoring to let houses and atill extort the | tax on same from the tenants by inserting | Clauses in leases to that effect ; Resolved Therefore, That we the Tenant |: | Right League bind ourselves that we wi! not rent or hire any house frem any auch (landlord or proprietor, and that we wil! give warning and leave all properties where such tax is imposed. 4. Whereas, All the improvements mace in the City since the Incorporation have been paid for by taxation out of the pockets _of the tenants, the City Council be asked to levy all taxes on Real Estate, and Horses and carriages, and upon Ineomes exceeding ' $500 of citizens who pay no Real Lstate ‘tax, and two dollars per head upon ali , voters. 5. Whereas, The Government has seen fit to exempt from income taxation all | officials of the Government and clergy ; | Resolved, That we strengthen the hands {of the City Council to frame such law and jto enforce it that shall deny the right of jeitizenship to all men who do not coniri- | bute something towards the City fund. | 6. Whereas, The tax upon personal pro- | | perty, such as en furniture, is obnxious in ithe extreme, and also upon goods on the shelf or in warshouse, and would bear npon ‘the poor man. Such tax would be put ‘upon the price of goods, and as we consider ‘there is a tariff high enough at present, we | therefore pledge ourselves to use our in fluence against any member of the civic board who shall attempt to justify it. ad i J, Whereas, The pumps and wells of the _eity are in bad erder and are not cleaned ‘out regularly as gthey should be for the amount that they eost every year, and are at present many of them unfit to use water from. Resolved, That we demand that the City Council shall see, through its proper ofti- eer, that every pump in the city is tho- ‘roughly cleaned owt, and boxed around in ‘such manner that no filth or refuse matter ‘can run down the sides of the pump like it ‘does at present. | §. Whereas a large amount of debt now rests upon the city by overdraft and by de bentures, upon which interest is paid, Resolved, Therefore that we consider it in- expedient to have any more debentures issued, apd that we will uphold our City Couneil in putting on a tax of two per cent on value of real estate, in order to imeet {current expenses, and to pay off all debts {promptly for which the eity is liable at ; present, 9. Whereos, When the tenants paid the ' taxes we had a City Surveyor, Resolved, That the City Council be re- ‘quested to appoint at an eariy date, a Sur- veyor or Inspector of buildings, whose ‘duties will be to see that no buildings en- ‘croach upon the streets and that no incom- -petent person be allowed te pian and erect | unsafe bu Idings, liable to fall upon persons | yiz., like Wright & McNutt’s did, to survey for new streets, to inspect the building of i drains and crossings, and to havea general ‘oversight of all city works in conjunction with our energetic Street Commissioner. | 10. Whereas, Certain Landlords of a few ‘little shanties, for which they have fer years, exterted exorbitant rents, are e :dea- | voring to make the Real Estate Tax a dead jletter, and to shirk the payment of a just | tax, and to starve the public works of the | city by a penurious policy, | Resolved, That a Black Book shall be j ; ) | kept by the Tenant Right League, and ail | gigantic efforts put forth by them to eoerce | * Wonders of the Heavens” which appeared in Tue Examiner a short time ago. Let ua first notice the position of the Moon. As the last quarter will take place June 18th, the time selected is most unfor- innate for the seer in this respect, for then the moon’s attraction will be nearly at a quadrature with that of the Sun,—-the time veing that of neap tides,—which of itseli will be suffivient to take three-fourths .ef the edge off his argument. ae As for the planet Mercury, it has just passed its superior eonjunection, (May 17th) end on the 19th June will be 1 hour and 49 jainutes East of the Sun, as seen from the Earth, and about its mean distance from the centre of the System. This differs materially from its representation in the diagram. Neither will Venus be in the direction in- dicated, aa iis inferior conjunction oceurred en the 2d of May, and consequently it will be 2 hours and 58 minutes in advance ef the Sun on the 19th of June. Here is a nice little disagreement again. No conjunction of Mars has taken place, nor will any occur during the year 1881. (Its opposition will be Dec. 24th.) On the 19th of June it will be 4 hours and 5 min- utes in advance of the sun; and ae its ‘perivelion willtake place on the 26th of | May, » e must rule it out of the threaten- jing comoin allen. | Jupiter, the larvest of all the planets, jpassed its conjenction on the 22nd of | April; and will, therefore, be on the 19th of | June, 2 hours and 25 minutes,or 37 degrees jin advance of the Sun. Saturn’s conjanction took place on the 21at ef April, only two hours in advance of i.Jupiter. Right ascension on the 19th ef |.June, 2 hours aud 55 minutes, or over 43 | dewrees in advance ef the Sun. | Uranus was in opposition on the Ist of | March; it will be in quadrature on the 30th ‘of May, and not in conjunction till Sep- itember Gth. At the time predicted it will be 6 hours and 24 minutes East of the Sun, or nearly in opposition to the Moon, and esrtainly not in a position te eid in a general conspiracy against the Karith Last of all we have Neptune, whose con- junctien was passed on the Srd of May. On the 19th of June it will appear abeut 2 heures and 28 minutes in advance of the Sun, ;and about three-quarters of a degree south of Jupiter. From these phenomena of the planets it appears ihat at the time referred to, the right aseension of Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune will only differ about 74 de- grees, and their declination less than half ‘nat amount. So neer a proximity of four of the prineipal planets can only take place at long intervals;—although they will be somewhat cleser on the 18th than on the 19th;—but then the 8un, Moon, Mercury and Uranus will be so differently situated from what has been represented, as to leave no ground ef apprehension on aceount ef their cembined attractive influence. Had the writer of the article in question selected the time of new moon, on the 27th of April, he might have made out « much better case; for then Venus was within five days of conjunction, and Neptune six days, while Jupiter and Saturn were only the same number of days past their conjune- tions, and Mercury and Mars much nearer than they will be on the 19th of June. And since that time passed by without disaster, no one need be under the least eoncern on account ef the aspect of the planets Curing the remainder of 1881. Park Corner Notes.
