R. from Ox- ford to Pictou is 67 miles, and the Pugwash branch is 5 miles—a total of 72 miles. It has cost the Government up to January Ist, 1889, for old claims against the Short Line Com- pany $149,133 and for construction and equip- ment, $1,061,179, making a total expenditure on this line of $1,150,412 ete Divorce.—In response to a motion of Mr. Gladstone, the divorce statistics of England have been brought down in the shape of a parliamentary return. With these facts be- fore him Mr. Gladstone has written to Mr. Gemmill, of Ottawa, acknowledging the latter's work on divorce, and saying: ‘1 think it highly probable that the Canadian system, of which I had not previousiy been aware, isthe best as being attended with the least danger.” ‘This is significant. McNeill, of West River, was struck by lightning in the roof, tearing off the saddle-board and some shingies. . The lightning entered the house, destroying some of the plaster, window casings, &e.
