The following reminiscence, from the New ‘York ' and E ' name of the Hudson dis- covered New York Bay in 1609. She was of eighty tons only, and was fitted out for Hudson by the‘Dutch East India Company, and ‘V by a crew of twenty sailors, part! ish. The f Moon left Am- ne am on the 4th ofApriI. 1609. Early 'm July, it reached the Banks of Newfound- land, touching at Cape Cod, and then ‘ tfito the mouth of the Chesapeake, in atDelaware ; on the evening of September 9, Iflli, Hudson came in sight ofthc high hills of Never-sink. and on the nest evsninglanded at Sandy Hook Bay. A Ylie Boat is so called from its being built expressly for the dificult navigation of Vlic and ‘Panel. The name, as well as the model, was very soon adopted in other countries. The French call it Filbot ; ' _ Fly Boat, and the Spanish Filbote ; an thus came the modern name Fillibnster, of lde so fiequently used in connection with the Cuban expeditions. Hudson as- cended the North River as far as the site of Albany, and was eleven days in sailing up, and as many more in drilling Onthe 9th of October, Hudson set sail from Sdtrdy Hook, and steered out to sea. ' ' eastward for a month without seeing any 1 by tho why, on the 7th of Novem- ber, IUD, he arrived safely at Dartmouth, in Devtatslrire. Hudson never revisited the river which bears his name, but the Hflfldoon did ; while Hudson, in attempt- ing, to lore the Northern Ocean, was _ his mutinons crew in a boat, and left to perish among the fields of ice in the‘ which was named alter him. The Half" oon sailed in I61! for the East Indies. and on the 6th of March, .1315, was wrecked and lost on the Island at‘ Mauritius. The Helf Moon was the first vessel that ever sailed on the nfllle Hudson. I-‘omrn Hrnsrns.-iflaughable story of some carrier i eons is told in an Antwe newspaper. e editor of a celebrated journal published in that city, sent a repor- ter-to-E-sssels for the King’s speech, and with him a couple of carrier: fieons to take beck llgejfipurnent.
