Even the Montreal Stock Exchange and the Toronto Bfock Exchange have suffered somewhat in the esteem of investors. 'I‘hia, of course. is inevitable. 1t has always been the experience that honest and well conducted business houses have suffered from the faults and misde- meanors of others, although, of course, to a lesser degree. The ethical standards of the ‘Ibr- onto and Montreal Block Exchanges are high. Their rules and regulations provide fair tieatmentdor investors. Members of these exchanges adhere to proper brokerage standards. Those other exchanges that show- ed themselves lax in the governing of the conduct of their members and who permitted serious and inexcus- ' able evils to flourish will be required by new provincial laws to operate on sounder lines ln the future. Bu! legislation is not the safest assurance that the investors can have. The ox- clisnges themselves must by their action win public confidence Just as lthe ‘Toronto Stock Exchange and thc Montreal Stock Exchange, (and it may be noted also the Montreal Curb Market) have vion the confidence of others. There is not a stock exchange in Canada that cannot make itself a ” useful instnimerit in_ public finance. In the meantime while some of them are going through periods of trouble and reorganisation public confidence 5 should not be denied to those that have already achieved the higher plane. SOUTHERN NOTES At the present time Ncrthumbci land Strait is quite free from lee. Mrs. Mary Mzicleod, who formerly ' lived in Ulgg and is the rellct of iii- late Samuel MacLeod, who was n brother of the late Dr. James Mac- Lcod and also of the late D. C. Mac- Leod, K. C., both of Charlottetown, ls now visiting in the home of Mrs. Malcolm MacNelll, Little Sands. Mrs. llfacleod is of an advanced age, bul. time has dealt most’ gently with her '_ land has taken little of her former strength and none of her faculties from her. She la, as the saying is, m; chipper as a. lurk and brisk as a bar, despite her 93 years. Yesterday. clen- pite the early hour and bad roads. she braved the journey of 2'... milcr. to the station (by wagon) sprang lightly into the train and off to the city, returning the same day, and was full of animation and excitement over the pleasure of the iaunt and the incidents she noted on the way and in the town. A notable feat in- deed for lier years. This province, as is well known, ls rich in mineral resouices, gold, silver, lead, copper, iron, tin, and precious stones being fairly abundant but they are all above the surface of the ground and were never beneath the soil of this province, and were all im- ported. However, there may be min- erals in commercial quantities in our strata though not yet discovered. Mr. Richard Moore, of Wood Island, is strongly impressed that he has found indications of the presence of coal on his farm, and I hope he turns out to be right. In the event of hls suc- cess in finding coal, he will benefit not only himself and hls district par- ticularly, but the whole province gen- erally. There have been some very deep borings made ln this province for minerals in years gone by. About a. mile east of Mr. Moore's farm there was n well bored to the depth of 2on2 in the year i909 under the direction of the Dominion Government. ‘rhls boring is on the farm owned by Mr. samuel Dixon. In 192d and 1927 two deep borlngs were made in Governor's Island, owned by Mr. J. H. Judson. of Alexandra. These wells were put down by thevweslthy firm known as the Henry L. Docherty Company, of New York- The first well was put down to a depth of 1507 feet and the second to the great depth of 5965 feet, being almost s mlio and s quar- ter in depth. Altogether seven deep borinlfhave been made in this Dro- vince and noaeJiavs shownthe pres- sure of minerals in plying quantities. but tlila does not at all conclusively prove that none will ever be found. It proves onlrtnat there is none in the places tried. We wlsh Mr. Moors ovary success in his venture. ‘ The recent ralna and snow have stews the frost almost completely outofthesosdaand thesswillsoon I in laugh improved condition. -.-_u ‘Ifha reofit execution of lydnay . ‘A ' THE ci-lAkLtrl'i‘iirl0vvNitiuaitliinhi F \ I (ii-eel; Easier with t new and Charming Fashions THE COLLECTION OF‘ SPRING apparel offered you stands out as a really rare achievement-exempli- fying the new fashions in all their brilliant differences from past seasons.
