Storo 109% Richmond $0., Chorlottotown Snack Bar, as Central, Simmer- lids find it possible to attend. The guest speaker of the evening was ‘Mr. A. G. McColl, research director of the Canadian Research Committee on Practical Education. The subject of Mr. McCall's address was "Agricultural Education at the High School Level." He stated that during the past thirty years many changes had occurred in education. These changes, however, have not affected rural educational methods. Rural education is not of a quality that will induce rural children to remain in school. This coupled with the scarcity of farm labour and the fact that many parents do not be- lieve an education is necessary for farm workers has resulted in about only 28 per cent of rural youth of hich school age attending school. The partial solution to these problems, said Mr. McColl is the building of composite high schools, where. instead of courses being giv- en brimariiy for the 5 per cent that will eventually attend university as is being clone now. vocational training courses will be given in practical agriculture that will bene- fit tho students who intend to re- turn tn the farm. Mr. McColl also pointed out that it is commonly accented that the brightest students should go on to prepare themselves for the various profession! while only tho more backward students return to tho farm. It is time this traditional outlook was changed, he said: yesterday's methods are not. good enough to comnete with today's orobinns and that we need the best brains available on the farm. A lively discussion was held m1 many of the points raised by the speaker. at the conclusion of which a motion thanking the sneaker for his interesting and timely address. was moved by Dr. Clark and un- onimousiy accepted by all present.
