by Matthew Beardsley If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. It’s an age old phrase that has been spoken time and again in connection with sports. It finally came true for the UPEi Field Hockey team, when on Sunday, they defeated St. F.X. 4-0. Their first regular sea- son win in over three years. They not only recorded their first win but all amounts they scored more goals in the game then they have in four years. The Lady Panthers won in im- pressive fashion as well. The to- tally dominated St. F.X. in every facet of the game. Heather Mor- rison put the Lady Panthers on Field Hockey Team Wins First Game the board when she converted a crossing pass from Kellie Shaw at the 19:02 for an easy tap in. UPEI was then awarded a penalty stroke when a St. F.X. player covered the ball in close to the net. Patricia Shields was cho- sen to take the shot and she made no mistake with it, firing the shot high to the left corner. Then just five minutes later rookie Francis Moffat moved in from outside and fired a shot to the mow corner to up UPEI’s lead to 3-0. The Lady Panthers finished up in the second half where they left off in the first. Francis Mof- fat scored her second goal of the game and third of the weekend when she tapped in a goal mouth pass. UPEI goalie Sandy Jardine recorded her first shutout of the season with little trouble. St. F.X. had very little penetration and only three short corners. On Saturday UPEI played a ‘lackluster game, really only pres- suring Saint Mary’s after Francis Moffat scored with three minutes left. Saint Mary’s took advantage of some sloppy defensive play to edge UPEI 2-1. Head coach Simone MacKen- zie said she used a special speech to get her team up for the game. “I told them I have a special need or want to beat my former alma matter.” “I told them to be just in ev- erything they did. First to the ball on offensive, defensive every- thing. Just to be more aggre- sive. yesterday we were barking off. We had to take it to them.” Mackenzie singled out Heather Morrison as one of many who played well. “She played extremely well. It’s quite possi- ble she’s playing with a hairline fracture in her hand.” Dawna (Stevenson) and Debbie (White) really controlled the tempo. Debbie White said are of the the keys was the teams ability to play as a unit. “We played as a team today. We really played up to our potential.” Third year player Hellayh Noonan said the loss brought the team back down to earth. “We were a bit cocky, after our pre- season wins. The loss made work more as a team as opposd to working as individuals. It just fun to win.” Heather Morrison said t team came out determined win. “We wanted to win. Rigl from the whistle we played hard We want to be first in everything We were in a much better fra of mind. We showed a lot of o fensive power today.” Simone MacKenie hopes no) that the team can build on thi win. “We'll go from this gan to the next. Try and live on ij We want to be consistent in e ery game.” If the Field Hockey Panthe play as well as they did on Sun day, they can be expect som good things this season.
