      Welcome
      back
      to
      university!
      My
      name
      is
      Nadine
     
     
      DeWolfe,
      lama
      psychology
      majorand
      amin
      my
     
     
      senior
      year.
      This
      year
      I
      am
      the
      Vice
      President
     
     
      External
      (VPE)
      with
      our
      Student
      Union.
      The
      VPE
     
     
      assesses
      student
      affairs
      outside
      of
      the
      Student
      Union
      —
     
     
      and
      is
      the
      liaison
      with
      provincial
      government
      and
     
     
      other
      universities.
      I
      will
      also
      be
      conducting
      research
      i
     
     
      about
      how
      students
      are
      affected
      by
      a
      variety
      of
      |
      |
     
     
      factors
      such
      as
      tuition
      increases
      and
      the
      present
      state
      .
      |
     
     
      of
      our
      post-secondary
      education.
      UPE]
      is
      also
      an
      |
     
     
      active
      member
      of
      the
      national
      organization
      called
      CFS
      |
      |
     
     
      -
      the
      Canadian
      FederationofStudents.
      Oneofmy
      |
     
     
      duties
      as
      VPE
      includes
      the
      responsibility
      of
      being
      the
      |
     
     
      CFS
      organizer
      and
      voting
      delegate
      at
      UPEI.
      At
      the
      |
     
     
      present
      time
      one
      of
      my
      concerns
      is
      the
      3%
      tax
      on
      |
     
     
      student
      loans.
      This
      year
      a
      3%
      tax
      has
      been
      placed
      on
      |
     
     
      student
      loans.
      When
      students
      go
      to
      the
      bank
      to
     
     
      process
      their
      loan
      and
      collect
      the
      first
      instalment,
      we
      ©
     
     
      will
      be
      asked
      to
      hand
      over
      an
      amount
      of
      money
     
     
      equivalent
      to
      3%
      of
      that
      loan.
      We
      still
      pay
      interest
     
     
      on
      this
      money
      although
      we
      neversee
      any
      of
      it.
      The
     
     
      student
      union
      at
      UPEI
      is
      angry
      with
      this
      tax
      and
      we
     
     
      hope
      everyone
      supports
      us
      in
      our
      opposition
      to
      it.
     
     
      Although
      many
      of
      you
      may
      have
      already
      processed
     
     
      your
      loans,
      those
      who
      haven’
      t
      are
      encouraged
      to
      pay
     
     
      it
      with
      a
      check
      that
      has
      been
      made
      up
      by
      CFS
      national
      |
     
     
      office
      -
      itis
      a
      legal
      check
      so
      y
      long
      as
      you
      include
      your
      _
      |
     
     
      account
      number.
      These
      are
      available
      frommeinthe
      _
     
     
      student
      union
      office.
      Anyone
      else
      who
      wishes
      to

      express
      their
      outrage
      with
      the
      3%
      that
      they
      payed
      at
     
     
      the
      bank
      is
      encouraged
      to
      sign
      a
      form
      letter
      that
      are
     
     
      also
      available
      at
      the
      Barn.
