We have the thighest regard for the Medical Coun- j eil, the Medical Society and the pro- § fession generally within their proper E sphere, and we make no objection for lthe time being to the rules and re- gulations which the Council or the ‘Medical Society may prescribe for ,the physicians and surgeons within lthe Province so far as they do lnot conflict with the rights and .privileges of the general pub- llic. But we do object to the Medinal Council undertaking to cor- ltrol *-he press in regard to what shall :or shall not appear in the columns of the newspapers. _ The newspapers of the country are funder control ofa body of men who Ihave bool- trained to their calling, may be assumed to have some apti- _-.-1 ltitude for its duties, and are devoting themselves to their arduous work with some measure of Qld iudg-` ment. It is fail' to aasume that they know the duties of the newspaper pre fession better than the (doctors do; justas the doctors are mach better instrncted in what pertains to medi- A editor or reporter as such, toprescribe lpills or powders for a patient, or to advise whether or not a limb shall be out off or the interior of the body ex- `plored and its deranged organism set ; right by an operation. They have I too much good judgment, and are far I too modest to thus trench upon a lfield already occupied by men of spe- lcial training and superior skill. § Equally it is not within the province of ' the Medical Council as suchto dictate ° to, or even advise those who conduct newspapers as to what they shall print ‘and what they shall consign to the I waste-basket. Somuch premised we may venture te hint that the members of the Council in their Minute for the instruc- tion ofthe press seem to have been guided by very erratic and incom- prehensible rules of logic and ethics whi h we Iind it difficult to reconcile witxg their admitted learning and abi ity. (whether gving at ,3g E;;,,,|,:¢|§ Lehew; small-wee paoklmg omaha. large said: with er without the connivance of the medical man) “has become very com- mou.” Next we are told that it “is very disgraceful in itself”-which is a broad charge that the newspapers have heretofore commonly disgraced themselves. Then we are told that the Council will not consider the physician blameless unless he can clearly demonstrate his non-complicity, this position being based upon the unsound and un-British principle that an accused or suspected pen on shall ,be held guilty until he has proved his innocence. ` F' all d _ in ly, an most illogical of`all, the newspapers which have in the A be beautitul, and it’s . he useful. t In our furniture stock you _ without the conmvance or the medt _ 'f ( . . ‘ _ _ ’ ' o cal man) are asked not to do it again A despatch tells that he was h . . 7 TUESDAY' OCTOBER 1°' 189°' "unless such shall be signed by the ored with a very warm reception by " H H w “ ' ' ' ” ` " ' ` "* medical men themselves” In other 20,000 French .Canadians there. ,THE MEDICAL COUNCIL words, gentlemen of the Press! you We have no doubt that French Cana 0 AND THE NEWSPAPERS' are “respectfully” asked by the Medi- diana and Acadians every where feel To the Bazaar in aid of the We _ U in Q” column thecal Council of P.
