Sports watch The latest news from UPEI sports The UPEI Basketball Panthers won their own tournament this past weekend in the UPEI Fall Basketball Classic held at the Sports Centre. The Panthers beat the Queen’s Golden Gaels on Friday and went 2-0 on the weekend, beating the defending Quebec Federation Champion Concordia Stingers 93-79 in overtime. In other action in the tournament Saturday, Acadia beat up on Queens, winning 97-48. The women’s team was also involved in a tournament on the weekend. The Lady Pan- thers went 1-2 at the Dalhousie Subway Centen- nial women’s basketball tournament. UPEI lost 93-54 to Winnipeg on Friday, won 73-49 over Ryerson, and lost on Sunday 88-70 to the McMaster Marauders. Both themen’s and wom- en’s basketball teams begin regular season ac- tion this weekend. Inhockey, the Panthers split their games with the UNB Reds in Fredericton, New Bruns- wick. On Friday, Cory Power led the way with five points as the Panthers won 5-4. Saturday, UNB rebounded with a 7-4 win. The Panthers play Mt. Allison this Friday night at 7:00 in Sackville, New Brunswick. In volleyball, the Panthers, like the hockey team, also split their games on the weekend. On Saturday, the Panthers won their first match of the year 3-2 over St. FX with game scores of 15-10, 15-11, 12-15, 12-15 & 15-13. On Sunday, though, St. FX swept the Panthers 3-0 with scores of 15-2, 15-12, 15-9. In CIAU action, British Columbia defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 2-1 inan overtime shootout in the championship game.
