Those acquainted with the character of the Patriot, were fully prepared for its violent, and altogether unseemly In coarse, diatribe against the Hon. Joseph Pope. the year 1873, when Mr. Laird was the representatiye of the Island in the Govern- ment at Ottawa, Mr. Pope was insulted and the rules of the Civil He und =unwarranutably dismissed and wrenged, Service wera grossly violated was summarily from the Office of Dominion Auditor, ete. without cause assigned, But time brings its revenges. Seven have passed Mr. Pope has, at length, the satis- years away. faction of being reinstated in the offic: from which he was unjasily expelled, and an advantageous cule of the Civil Service has, in his case, been vindicated Consequently, and as a matcer of course, the Pufriot rages and imagines vain things. It is, indeed, to be regretted that, of the large number who were, with Mr. Pope, wronged and insnited, Mr. Pope’s case ia the ealy one in which right has been main- tained and satisfaction given. We admit that the distinction which Mr. Pope enjoys lends color te the charge of the Patriot that the Minister of Fisheries is more sedulous in his care for his personal Marine and relatives than he is for his political friends. For this reason, we regret the singularity with which Mr. Pope has been treated, though we rejoice that justice has been and = that vicious prac- ssing officials without cause done him, the tice of dism sot. in his case, been endorsed by the Government. assigned has There is ne ground whatever for the Putriods attack upou Mr. | Mr. many offices in this Province. Pope. Pope has filled, with ability, The Pat- riot fails to point te even one particular in which he has given evidence of incapacity. Indeed, the /’u#riot is constrained to admit that, as head of the Public Lands Oitice, lie was able to do this Province good service ; and, knowing full well the strength of Mr. Pope's claim, by reason of the meritorious services he has rendered the country, it is careful to say, ‘‘ we shall hear a great deal about Mr. public services.” No doubt a yreat deal could be said, with truth and propriety, about Mr. Pope’s pub- lic services. Pope's But wo contend that, suppose Mr. Pope never did a single act for the yood of the country, he shenld still, at the first opportunity, have been reinstated in the position from which he had been unjustly and ontrageously dis- missed, The etforts of the Patriot to raise a little sympathy for Mr. Robins are really lugu- brious. A Civil Service ‘oficial is subject to few chances or changes. His life is a smooth one. Bunt he is, hewever, subject to removal from one office to another. Mr. Robina has been removed to the seat of Government, with higher duties and a higher salary. rich, But Mr. Robins has grown He has property here to take care vf. Therefore, it is inconvenient for him te teks the more elevated position! And the Government has, according to the Patriot, treated him most foully. Few, we think, will. in this, agree with the Put- riot; while many will, we venture to say, be glad to know that in doing justice to Mr. Pope, the Government has advanced Mr. Robins to a better position. . The Senate would be strengthened in the estimation of the coun- try, and would fill the functions peculiar to it with increased effect.” ~ SN Last evening Victoria Division, Ne. 4, of this City, presented an interesting scene ou the ovcasion of an official visit from the P. M. W. Chaplain, Rev. G. 0. Huestis; of Nova Scotia. The address of the reverend gentlemen was full of interest and cheer. In the year 1845 he identified kimself with the Sons of Temperance, and sinee that time has enjoyed unbro.en counection with the Order, Our friends have every reason for encourage- ment. ‘Temperance effert in the past has not been in vain. Short and interesting addresses followed from Brothers J. B, Cooper, Jehu bowers, J. W. Wadman, W. F. Morris, J. J. Chappelle and WV. W. Beer, and « very pleasant Divisional Meeting was brought to a close, the brethren singing the ode of the Oréer. 1 <-> <i @&---— Boxe Dusv. -An excellent fertilizer-—300 to 400 pounds to the acre, will give weaderfu! results. Four races took place at Upton Park—' a three minute, a four year old, a gentie- man’s driving, and a match—tweo of which were pronounced to be the liveliest and mest interesting races ever witnessed in the Province. The day was all that could ve desired, the track was as good as could be expected, aud were it fer the riotous preceedings of a yang of disorderly ruffians who entered the Park shortly after the races commenced, we would have no hesitation in saying that the day was the most enjoyable ever spent at Upton. The Manager of the Park has, we learn, the names of the greater number of those olack guards. He will lose no time in prose- cuting them, and we hope that the Magis- trate will not fail to make an example of these whese villainous conduct dreve se many respectable people from Upton Park yesterday. The Judges appointed were Messrs. A. N. Large, Archibald Holmes and Samuel Stumbles. ‘The races commenced at 1.30, the three- minute. class being the first called. The entries were :--- C. Hepevill, who assumed first place, showed good speed. Shylock was at bis wheel, and did not fail to give hiin the go by at the three quaiter. He dashed down the homestretch in a style which was adimired byall, follewed by Zulu, Hopevill, at some length, Megsenger, Lady Bagneli and Bell in the rear. Seeond Heat—Siylock led, but jibed and caught a boot at the turn and acted badly until the quarter. fady Bagneli went to the front at the quarter, followed by Zulu. They trotted splendidly and passed the haif-mile pole in the following erder: Lady Bagnell, Zulu, Shylock, Hopevill, Messenger, and Bell. At the three quarter Shyleck took secoud position and pushed for first. Lady Bagnell trotted splendidly to the finish, makiug remarkably good time, Shylock ending secoud, Zuin taird, Hepevill fourth. Hopevill and Shylock—who by the way are half brothers—fought hard for the second place. They trotted beautifully, On the home stretch Hopewell, however, went off his feet, and Shylock teok the second position, Hopevill third, Zula fourth, Messenger fifth, aud Bellin the rear, and kept so until the finish, Belland Messenger were disorderly the whole heat. Fourth Heat— Messenger and Bell were withdrawd. ‘The first owing to an accident and the second to disorderly conduct. At the start, Lady Baguall lead, with Hopevill at her wheel, trotting surprisingly. Zalu took third and Shylock acting badly in the rear, He came down handsomely at the quarter, and gave Zulu the go by. All tratted splen- didly over the course -Lady Bagnall showing splended speed, was far ahead at the three- quarter. Here, Shylock collared Hopevill. On the home-stretch he attempted te pass her but Hopevill galloped and led by a length. Shylock came up again and both trotted down the homestretch handsomely and finished almost neck and neck--Lady Bagnall being first, Hopevill got secon L Shyteck third, and Zatu fourth, Lady Baguell was awarded first prize, Shy- lock second, and Eopevill third. POUR YEAR OLD s, The entries for the four year old race were as follows : J. Squarebridge’s b. g. Little Mack. KF. Carters’s b, gy. St. Jalian. C, Wescott’s by m. Peerless. Second Heat Lady Mack ied, clezely fol- lowed by Lady Jeff and Lady Kate. They trotted splendidly ever the course.
