The Panther Prints March 19, 1996 Letpers te fee Saiter A university paper is the voice that speaks for the student body, a group of people who themselves wish to be treated with respect and dignity. The Panther Prints, however, has denied this to other people and, in fact, has pro- moted the degradation, humiliation, and personal ridicule of others. The problem with the "Corruption Quiz” was not that it discussed sexual topics, it was that it did so in a very base manner. The whole idea of having a lover is to develop with someone that ESSENTIAL intimate bond that all individuals need. This requires trust and devotion and it CANNOT be achieved in one night stands and CANNOT be maintained in unfaithful relationships. I was in the military for three and a half years and worked in a bar for two and have observed that, besides the venereal disease, social irresponsibility breeds hurt, anger, distrust, misunderstanding, generalizing and emotional, and mental well-being of other people. Besides degrading humans in general, the Pan- ther Prints also maliciously used and viciously attacked specific individuals. A list of the "Sexiest Profs at UPEI" was given with the pictures of the top two being placed directly in the middle of an entire section based on sex. Those professors, the unwilling subjects of this sexual representation of them, were very embarrassed and humiliated. When parents, who support this institution with financial aid to their children and by paying taxes that the government uses for student loans and grants to the university, complained to the student union, university administration, the media, and the paper itself, the paper, which seems to believe that only it has freedom of speech, blasted the parents for speaking to anyone but the paper, which had no respect for what they had to say. A "Stupidity Quiz" asked how "How stupid are you?" and gave "Spe- cial thanks to all the parents who in- spired this quiz." Question one is directed to all parents, but also very personally at one woman, mentioned in "Jane Resigns" on page three. Question twenty tells the parents that this "stupid- ity quiz was meant to test" "a - your The Evils That We Do stupidity" (obviously the correct answer as noted by its low number). Parents are not against their children ever having sex. Every time I've been to a wedding, the people tapping the crystal the most times to get the newlyweds to kiss are always the parents and NOBODY is happier that they will be sharing a bed together. It was the promotion of loveless, uncaring relationships, not sex, that parents were against. In life, it is perfectly normal to go through several relationships. Most Canadians marry in their late twenties, but lose their virgin- ity long before then. That is why birth control and protection, and proper knowledge of them, are so vital. But it is NOT the promotion of sex education that is offensive about the February 13 and March 5 issues of the Panther Prints, it is that they have degraded human beings as mere sexual objects, hurt and humiliated specific individuals, and savagely attacked and ridiculed people who voiced their opinions against this. Aldera Chisholm, the managing editor, "stands firm" behind these actions and has yet to print an apology to any of the people who were targeted. She says that it was all done for entertainment. Is this funny? Are you laughing? I hope not. ‘Nuff said. Steve Smith Summer Camp Jobs in the U.S.A. Visas Arranged Lakeside Residential Girls Camp in Maine Service workers. Granted the blasphemic actions of the male who inter- viewed them were in bad taste and of low regard, but the Violent Femmes still have no right to put down men in the ending of the letter. Their tasteless joke about men being Neanderthals shows that they are no better than the man or men who coerced them into doing the video. Putting down the male sex as a whole does not add to their argument, but detracts from it. Look at it this way: if men are so stupid that we don't understand normal English, then the Femmes are just as stupid by letting themselves be coerced by men. The men indicated in the letter were wrong, but the Femmes' use of such a bigoted remark was also wrong. Two wrongs do not make a right. Fig. 5.
