Monday Laura—Leigh We are your friendly neighbourhood Winter Carnival reviewers. Our system is based on a scale of zero to four Panther paws. We enjoyed Winter Carnival Week and hop you did too. Here is what we thought: Winter Carnival HE MM MM MMO KR psa * % Laura—Leigh » + Hockey is not usually my sport but at Wednesday’s game it was hard not to get caught up in the exciting and spellbinding at- WP ncauhare of the energy charged x forum. If ever there was a dis- play of Panther pride it was there. Snow sculpture could have been a great event. At other Universities they have fifteen foot massive snow carvings. When nobody showed up on Monday, it was changed to Tuesday, and then extended all week. I can remember seeing shots of past sculping events at UPEI but this year was dead. Perhaps in fu- ture years, to gain spirit and in- terest the societies should chal- lange one another such as the the Vets against the School of Busi- ness or GEM vs CIMN or Marion against the Engineers. WEDNESDAY Terri—Lyn Another great turn out ff winter carnival was the actic packed hockey game betwed Moncton and UPEI. Represents tives from boths sides filled th stands. Many people paint¢ their faces a proud UPEI gree and white and sat behind th players to give them that extr bit of moral support. This exci Laura—Leigh Saturday night was an evening of sheer enjoyment. Mike Mandel was amazing, comi- cal, and thoroughly entertaining! This is the kind of entertainment that the non-drinking students of U.P.E.I. and the underage people have been waiting for. Mike Man- del tours almost exclusively uni- versities because as he says uni- versity students “just love to see their friends do stupid things!” Mandel went on to explain how hypnosis works. Your own imagination is just too good. Your mind will accept ridiculous things. Before he took volunteers Mandel explained that with hyp- nosis you are not in a trance — you are fully aware of what is going on around you but you just don’t care. That is exactly. how it felt when I was under. On stage I was nervous and very much aware of the audience, then I focused on the palm of his hand. He counted, I got sleepy, and he spoke faster and faster. “Key in, key in” was imprinted on my brain.. I got deeper into sleep as I felt my eyes flutter and roll upwards under my lids. Then he touched my neck and I laid down on the chair next to me, deeper than ever, beyond dreams. I would like to have this man put me to sleep every night — no more insomia. Mandel put us to sleep and made sugestions in our minds such as “When you hear the words ‘Mennan Speed Stick’ you will jump up and say ‘I’ll buy that.’ ” It sounds dumb, but when he gives you the cue, you think “I won’t do it, the oth- ers look funny anyway.” How- ever, you find yourself already on your feet and shouting with the others. Anyway,I won’t describe the whole evening those who saw it know it was fantastic, facinat- ing, and fun! (Hey Randell, your shoes are on the wrong feet.) I give this event four panther paws. Terri—Lyn About 70 people turned out at the Mike Mandell show on Satur- day night. Since very few tick- ets were sold the student union waved the ticket price bea it everyone had known this was a free per- formance attendance would have probably doubled or tripled. However, the poor turnout did not weaken the performance of Mike Mandell, rather it enhanced it, as with a smaller crowd, Man- dell had to adjust his methods. Mandell began his show as a comedy act which was very orig- inal and funny. He tried to put the audience at ease about hyp- notism by saying, “I’m almost a doctor, so if anything goes wrong I’m almost qualified to help you!” «Mandell asked for volunteers and after the poor, subjects were sent back to: the audience, ten people remained. Mandell then sent the subjects into.a hypnotic state and they were given sug- gestions which made them per- form humourous acts. The sub- jects. were then told they would remember nothing until they left the building, so after they went back to their seats they sat there waiting for the show to begin. The act, although a bit lengthy was. very funny nd in- teresting as well. Mandell could probably do as well as a comedian as he could as a hypnotist but he combines the two. with flair and imagination. ; (Rating 2 panther paws) I give this one Panther claw because it was a good idea. This event usually produces some very interesting and well done pieces of work. However this year at UPEI interest was nil. Therefore, this evert w is cancelled.
