Mrs. Jerry didn't see my need for a house in the bank and she said so. Jerry named several reasons why it would be a good thing to have a house in the bank. One of. them was that if there should be a flood. it might wash away their house of rushes and mud out in the water. Or the water might become so- deep that they might be flooded Refrigeration saws and SISRVICIE Repairs To Ali"."wlres MUTURS Rewinding and Repairs ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE Repairs Palmer Electric Phones B543-8644. Mrs. Jerry still shook her head. "This isn't the time of year for floods," said she. ”But the unexpected does hap- pen." Jerry persisted. There have been floods at this time of year,i and we could have another." So they argued back and forth, and their voices grew squeakier and squeakier and sharper and sharper. Still it wasn't a real quar- rel, it was just is difference of opinion. You know. folks can have differences of opinion without quarreling. Such differences of opinion can be a very good thingi sometimes. - "I thiuk it is going to rain," said Jerry, changing the subject. "I hope it is," said Mrs. Jerry. "We need it.. I've never Laughing Brook and the Smiling Pool with less water in them. than they have now." with this she dived and disap- peared ln the house...lerry follow- ed her. They didn't like being out in the daylight. Inside the house it was cool and dark, and both curled up to sleep. When they awoke. it was the time of day they liked best. The Black Shadows had come down from the Purple Hills. It was rain- ing gently. They didn't mind that, in fact, they liked it. Like Mrs. Quack, and the other Duck folk. Jerry and Mrs. Jerry are water lovers. They went about their busi- ness -Just as if-it were not rain- ing at all, The gentle rain became less gentle. It fell harder and harder. It poured and it kept right on pouring. It rained all that night. When, a little before daylight, Jerry and Mrs. Jerry went back home. the rain was still falling. It rained all of the next day .To- wardlevening the rain ceased for a while. When the two Muskrat: went out. they found Laughing Brook rushing down into the smiling Pool. It was pouring into the Smil- ing Pool with such a rush that it was hard to swim against. The water was rising fast. Presently. Mrs. Jerry began to worry. It look- ed as if their new house might soon be under water. It was then that Mrs. Jerry changed her mind about a house in the bank. seen i By Josephine C ” of -.,.;.;. -,.-.-... ... .;-;.;.,.;.,.;.,.;.'1 PART-ICOII BIDDING Possession of s part-score not only affects the bidding in obvious ways. since the game goal is dif- ferent, but also exerts a. subtle-ln- fluenee that changes the meaning of many cells. This latter point is not generally appreciated. Let's look at a typical case. North dealer. Both sides vulnerable. . North-South 40 on score. '.'OC-I 0'D9'O This was the bidding in s rub- ber game at A prominent New' York bridge club: North East South wgg 1 0 Pass 2 N 1' Pia; 3 N T Pass, 8 N T Pass Pass Pass West's opening lead made no un- ferenee - the declarer had.no plsy whatever for .the slam contract. does not reveal any glaring flaw, and in all fairness it must be ad-' mltted that the partners had a cer- tain iimount of "duplication" specifically, the combined holding of the five honors in clubs with only three tricks, and the five honors in hearts with only four tricks., However. this is a danger always to be,reckoned with, and South, particularly, could foresee the strong possibility of this duplication. Thus, having jumped to two notrump at the 40 score, South should not have been so quick to accept his partner's mild slam try. The nub of the proposition is this: when a player who has a part-score jumps io two notrump, he is stating that he has some- thing in reserve. and therefore his bid in itself is a slam suggestion. however tentative The two-no- trump bid is made in this case on the sort of hand that would well justify it three-notrump bid at a love score: this is the point that average players do not fully under- stand. ,North. holding three aces and a better hand than was guaranteed by his opening, did no more than was proper in going along wtih South's strong action. even though his own three-notrump bid was over-score. but south should have confined his own further effort to a gingerly four-notrump bid (not conventionally Blackwoodl, and North passed at that safe ebntract.
