SMARITIME PROVINCE PROSPECTS.
3 were the most prosperous parts of British
North America. Labor was constant and
well paid; the raw material was abundant;
_it paid to build ships, to sell or to keep,
' ditiousfortunes werernade in ship-building
and ship-owning, and the industry con-
T tributed largely to the general prosperity.
But the time came when all this was
changed. The steamship took the place
of the sailing ship, and first iron, and
afterward steel became the material of
construction. The Provinces almost
ceased to build ships, and the record of
succeeding years has shown an ever de-
creasing tonnage on the Canadian
registers. We lost our place on the ocean
as the fourth largest ship-owning country,
fsllinn back to hfth and then to sixth.
We no longer built ships for sale in
B:itain.but we saw the trade of which
we were formerly the well-paid carriers
pass largely into British hands, and those
oi the otherotecl ship-building countries.
Now b'y the development of the iron and
steel industry at Sydney and other
paints the prospect israpidly opening for
the Maritime Provinces to regain their
last ground and become ship-builders

being made, and lt seems as if very soon `
indeed Sydney, Halifax and St. John
must ring with the sound of the riveting

The greatest possibilities turn upon the
facts here outlined. There is a consensus
of skilled opinion to the effect that iron
and steel can be produced at Sydney more
cheaply than in any other part of the
world. This condition must cause an im-

matter of capital and alittle time when
industryin which the inland Provinces
are unable to compete with them.
