rates to Central Canada constitute a
barrier against Prince Edward Is-
lands agricultural_ produce just as
effective as a tariff, Hon. W. M. Lea,
premier of the Island Province, em-
phasized in addressing the directors
luncheon at the Canadian National
Exhibition. Today was Prince Edward
Island Day, and Premier Lea was
the guest of honor.

forcefully maintained that freight
rates over long hauls in Canada
should be reduced, even at the cost
of higher short distance charges.

ter and some cheers.
Premier Lea. went on to discuss~
the resources of Prince Edward Is-
land, its development and its rela-
tions with the rest of Canada. Fol-
lowing the advent of the Cer Ferry '
,and improved transportation lines
traffic in the Provlnce's railways
has increased 350 percent in the last
six years, he said. Markets hrs been!
opened up in the Southern States
for its farm produce because its
farmers were able to produce effi-
ciently certified seed, their potatoes
belng of much higher standard than
required by the Dominion. They have
been able to enter the United States
market over a high tariff wall. The
Premier then called att/entlon to the
cheap land and fertile soil of Prince
Edward Island and the scientific
methods of the farmers, always striv-
ing to improve agriculture. 1-Ie dealt
also with its fox farming and fishing

Coming to the topic of Federal sub-
sidies to Prince Edward Island, Hon.
Mr. Len. explained that the wealth
of the predominant farming popula-
tion went through thc medium of
the banks into central Canadian in-
dustries and did not Yield taxes to
the provinces thus. Though larger
subsidies from Ottawa were not on1Y
fair but essential, the present
amounts are totally inadequate, hc
considered. 'they had remained static
since Confederation, though the Dil!-
chasing power of the dollar had feli-
en to forty percent of its pro Con-
federation value.
