tus Daity Examiner, | IUNE 20, 1883. ck and the Centennial! 3 New Bruns i Hixbibition Tae New Gruoswick papers labor un- | tera mistake which it may be as well to) wrrect at once. That the stock-raisers | i this Province are disposed to regard | with favor the Centennial Exhibition in | janor of St Joho—a City to which the | sople of this Island are attached by the | ) grongest ties is uadoubtedly true ; but hat the Pairiot vewspaper is in any sense | op degree an exponent of their views ard pelings with respect to the prize list is a rdicalous error. The prize list is pro ated against by Judge Hensley, Senator | Haythorue, Hon Donald Ferguson, C. C. | Gardiner, Henry Longworth, Patrick blake, Dr.Jeukins, and many others ; and *) eekoow no one who has a word tosa © isitsfavor. In fact, the St. John Tele- >) gaph itse!t is unable to defend it, either 7) tothe classification of stock or to the aa grizes offered ;— but pleads plaiutively ©) the subject of ways and meaus” and Ty wgpeals to “ public spirit.” | Now, we feel certain that the exceeding “4 «aaliness of the prizes offered will not % influence the action of our stockraisers © iwlf so much as the senseless classifica- Sion of avimals. Indeed, we are quite ea © ale in saying that if the Exhibition Com- = aissioners bad not a single dollar to ex- Sod in prizes, but had made a proper a ) dassification of the different breeds of > wimals, and had offered medals, or cards & oafmerit, or other marks of distinction > fr the best avima!s in each division, this s land would be well represented at the © (entennial Exhibition. S Bat, what are the facts? The Domin- ve vo Parliament has granted $10,000— 78 5.000 more than to any previous Ex- hibition——for the express purpose of pro- "= woing competition by haudsome prizes. ©) The Province of New Brunswick and the City of St. John have both given large gums in aid of the Exhibition in order > that there may be a represcntatiou alike = worthy of Canada and of the important event to be celebrated on the occasion. a Yet the prizes offered are more insignifi- "cant than those of many County fairs io Ontario, and the classification is such that the choicest animals must necessarily be 7 left out of the list ot winners. itis said that the Centeanial Exhibi- tion may, as that of Halifax, result in a loss, and that the prizes have, on that account, been curtailed. This is not Silikely. Halifax actually lost only abeut / $5,000; and that was, five times over, made upto its citizens by the trade which the Exhibition brought to the city. * With a good, attractive, well arranged MPrize List, the Centennial Exhibition WH would certainly have been more than » wlf-sustaining ; and the citizens of St. 7) Jchn would have all the advantages re- ultivg from thousands of visitors crowd- 1) ing into the city, day after day, so long +5 «3 the Exhibition was open to the public. That the Prize List has been so badly = bungled is to Tae Examiner, and we ) believe, to the people of all the Maritime = Provinces, a matter alike of great sur- s prise and sincere regret. We have W) lboked forward to the Centennial Exhi- > dition with the most kindly auticipations; ad even yet we are not without hope 7) that the Prize List may be reconsidered = —that a generous public spirit, and oot ©) 4 mean, craven spirit, may yet govern the councils of the Commissioners, and “Sihateven yet it may prove a grand fiecess, —__ oe. cena The Recent Appeais. a a ba We publish in another column, the de- > tisions of the Supreme Court of Canada, ™ inthe cases of Morris and others vs. © The Liquidators of the Bank of Prince * Miward Island and the Merchants > Bank of Halifax vs. McNutt.
