The complete novel in Lippincott’s Maga- zine for June, *‘John Gray; a Kentucky Tale of the Oiden Time,” is by James Lane Allen, who gives his readers a tender historical icture of the region named, singularly apart rom anything written against a Kentucky background heretofore, yet brimming with local knowledge, and rivalling in its exquisite sympa‘hy and touch all that the author has before produced. The peaceful theme of the tale, under Mr. Allen’s own marked originality of handling, only serves to enhance the in- terest of the story. Murat Halstead publishes the Journalistie Series with a paper on his **Early Editorial Experiences,” that cannot fail to attract a reeawukening interest in the series. Hon. John James Ingalls contributes an article on the West, entitled **Westward the Course of Empire tikes its Way,” bearin the impress of the ex-Senator’s powerfu atyle. In the Athletic Series, Krederick Weir gives a careful paper on the game of La- crosse. One of the most interesting articles in the number is Prof. John Bach McMaster’s historical sketch of The Struggle of the West. ‘**The Great American Desert,” by Wm. F. G. Shanks, gives an smount of information about the growth of the principal cities in that region which will be new and of keen interest to most readers. Next to the famine the most discourag- ing feature of Russian affairs has been the deplorable condition of the imperial fin- ances. Russia’s treasury has been practi- cally empty and her credit has been brok- en. Her great public works looking to the improvement and consolidation of the em- pire have been suspended. The govern- ment could not interest the great banking houses in their case. It was only the other day that the Rothschilds of Paris and of Vienna refused to come to Russia's assistance in the matter of a loan, In many ways the Russian Government has been so acting as te shut itself off from the sympathy of the intelligent portion of mankind. The official oppression of the people, the exile of political offenders to Siberia without trial, the rigorous persecu- tion of the Jews and the persistent and eruel policy which has been pursued for some years past towards the Germans in the Baltic provinces have aroused the in- dignation of humane, right-thinking people in all lands. If any government has need to enter npon the path of improvement it is a o = Czar. Russia’s immense army and her hereditary policy of ion have had much to do one bephts Tamayo in ve of bys t would be gratifying to see some change for the better, no mane what the cause. ‘a indications of such ch. are welcome. It is encouraging that we should learn almost at one and the same time that retrenchment has been ordered in all the government depart- ments, that the extensive army manoeuvres which were to take place not far from St. Petersburg, and in Western Russia, have been countermanded, and that a syndicate of French and Russian bankers have offered to take charge of the work of construction of the trans-Siberian railroad, a work tically suspended for the lack of funds, Fhe syadi- cate will represent a capital of 150,000,000 rubles, and the countermanding of the pro- jected military manoeuvres will, it is es- timated, effect a saving of 1,500,000 rubles. SKODA’S OINTMENT, the Great German Skin Cure, and made. Removes ee SuiLon’s Cure will immediately relieve ugh and Bronchitis.— Horseback Riding. Horsebsck riding is too little practised in Canada both by men and women. In- deed, a mat un horseback seems to suggest to the rural mind some extremity resulting from poverty, impassable roads or other distress. Canadian farmers are the most horse y—we do not say horse-loving— peop! in the world. Their preference ig to sit -ffeminately behind a half-blinded animal, worried and distorted with a bearing ein. and watch his paces, to sitting on his b ck and sympathetically shering his free motions. Their interest in bim is that of the trader speculating on gain or fame rather than that of ex uberant young life enj ying in active sympathy with a fellow-creature. Even the pleasure of holding the reins our farmers have a way of denying to their daughters and sisters. Any old, worn-cut horse ie good enough for them, and as for a good horse thev are certain to get into trouble with him and spoil him. What does a girl want wi'h learn- ing to drive fast horees ! As for a woman on horseback on the road or in the villxge she might expect to have the boys runnirg after ber shouting ‘‘circus.” This is all wrong Let both our boys and girls learn to ride on horseback and Jet them have every chance to 0 80. ————“<-o- a — Dangers of a Meat Diet. The evils of a meat diet are being appre ciated by many high livers in cities, and these are being counteracted partly by the wealthy in adding more fruits and vege- tables to their tables during the winter The chespuess of meat and the peculiar craving which the system seems to have for meat have gradually made it common for city people to live almost entirely off meat in the winter months. Moat is eaten three times a day in quantities; and the excessive use of such a diet is that rheumatic and gout temperaments are acquired. These temperaments are on the increase, and they are largely due to the excessive use of meat. Lime water counteracts the evils of his diet to a large extent. ee Good Rules for the Mistress, When engaging a servant be careful to explain her work to her, and let her under- gtand that the work must be done in your own way and not in the way of any former mistress she may have had, and this ex- planation must be made so that it shall not reflect upon the routine of any other house- hold. Try and arrange the houss work so that each servant may have an opportunity to attend church on Sunday. When your servants do well encourage them to do better by a few words of praise. Do not allow them to have visitors until after certain hours in the evening. Give your orders for the day to the couk as early in the morning as possible. Insist upon being informed when any- thing is broken or {cat. apron while making the beds, and that|" she knocks at the bedroom dvors before entering. to leave visitors standing in the hall, nor to give parcels to strangers without previous instruction. When you reprove, do so tirmly and de-!) cidedly. Only allow your rules to be broken once ; let dismissal, with customary notice, follow the second offence. Retain your temper under all circum- stances. Insist upon the punctual iy of the family as well as upon the punctuality of the cook. Be kind to your servants when they are ill, and thoughtful of them always ; in nine cases out of ten the considerate mistress will be rewarded by faithful service. Pay your servants’ wages regularly. Do not allow them to go out without first ob- taining your permission.—Ladies’ Home Journal, rr Trouble Ahead. The cashier passed the word of caution along the line. **Everybody look out !” he said, ‘‘the boss is mad.” **At me ?” said the head book-keeper. ‘Worse than that,” replied the cashier. **At you ?” asked one of the clerks. “Oh, no. It’s more serious than that.” *‘Has anyone done anything that’s ser- iovsly wrong ?” asked the new clerk. ‘Not that I know,” returned the cashier, ‘*but everyone in the office wants to look out for trouble.” ‘*Well, what’s tha matter,” asked ore of the men in despair. ‘“‘He’s mad at himself,” returned the cashier; **he’s sorry for something that he has done, and that’s when any man is the worst. Look out for trouble.” News Notes. Another cabinet crisis in Italy is an- nounced by the Times’ correspondent. Not only are the farmers of North Da- kota flocking into the Northwest, but ac- cording to despatches of late date it seems that a large number of settlers are coming to New Brunswick. The St. Johu Evening Gazette claims that 80 families have arrived from Boston so far this month. _><--—— — MAxés FLESH AND BLoop.—When the sys tem is all run down and there seems to be no hope of obtaining nourishment for the body by the ordinary proeess of food supply aud digestion, when the body is sinking fast, then is the tine to use Miller's Emulsion of pure Norwegian Cod Liver Oil.
