A Georgetown correspondent expresses the fear that adequate preparations have not been made to repel a probable invasion of smallpox during the coming winter, and especially in regard to pro- tecting our winter ports of entry. We regard the matter as a very vital one. There is every indication from the num- ber of centres already infected that smallpox will be very widely prevalent in Canada during the coming cold season. And there are so many ways by which he infection may be spread and may reach us even from distant points, that it becomes the health authorities to be on the alert and take all possible precautions ithout delay. The disease may be transmitted from lace to place by persons coming hither ho, with or without knowing the fact ay have been exposed to infection; it ‘may come in a bale of nieiclianclise, in 8 gr: B othing, baggage or oven in the mails. Precau- Something has been said by Premier where at the election of deie gates to the convention the chairman refused to permit the electors present to vote by ballot for the delegates of their choice. This looks like an attempts to pack the convention with delegates of a particular strips. The Liberal party in Canada in theolden time claimed the ballot as a ' privilege to which all were entitled and - introduced it in elections. We fail toses why the ballot should be refused in the election of delegates, when thosepresen* desireto vote in that manner.
