[li lnlllit Gullmll, MONDAY, APRIL 22, 1901. PRINCE STREET SCHOOL. The recent ve__ry hasty action of the City csmicii and the school Board in soils;-ntl ing to the appropriation of a portion of Prince Street school grounds for the for- mation of a new street seems to call for a few words of comment. In the first place it is to be observed that should the sufficiently Small play-ground of the school. It is only the portion of the school lot north of the school that is available or play, and this being less than two acres in area is quite small enough for the large and increasing number of pupils- about 600. It is further to be observed that the pro- posed street would take away the play- ground without adording the advantages to the general public which an ordinary street would give, because the proposed street runs at an acute angle instead of square across the land between Upper Prince and School streets. It would not connect with any other streets running in ihesime direction either east or west. All persons are familiar with the advan- 'asres of having streets cross at right angles instead of atacute or obtuse angles. Equally all are aware of the impirtance of streets connecting, or extending through the town in the same direction. This would bsimpossible with the pro- posed street. On a cali.. survey of the situation we are convinced that bath the City Council and the School Boardl have acted with- out sudicient consideration in this matter and have taken a wrong course which ought to be retraced. We cannot too carefully guard against en- croachments upon the City Parks and breathing-places, nor upon the too scant allotment of play-grounds for the school- children. In this case the desire seems to have been to secure with as little cost as possible a cross street from Upper Prince to SchoolStreet which may be need- ed. The proposed new street being at~an angle would be much longer and vastly less convenient then one made at right angles with Upper`Prince, and besides this it neither berins nur ends where cross street is most needed. . -1-_-*_-in THEPOWERS AND CHINA. _ 0 The claims which the European powers the to the France $56,000,000, nie Unites states $25,- and Austria. which could not have suffer- proposed street be made it will take away about one-third of an acre of the already. have made against China for compensa- P informed, but she has borne a very large than Ru§_»;m_-in the “ar that has been _ __._`__\'- ‘ of the people, and recognized therefore as carried on by the powers seeking redresS_ fifllll " ‘ Th° Peop 1°,” P°p°r' It will be seen with satisfaction by those dlsgracedtheinselveslu their metlfodi of _. conducting the war by massacre and plll- _» age, and China has alrea. ly suffered more ___ than thimalhbutthe guna ot grab, or partition seems likely to be played out fo ’j_ _ the bitter end.
