While it would scarcely be correct to say that agriculture is the exclu- sive business in Prince Edward ' Is- land, it is quite sais to say that it is the one business upon which all others depend, that without it there could be no other business. In the in- terests oi every other- calling, then, as well as in the interests of the far- mers themselves, it is important that this calling be fostered to its utmost limit, to its ultimate Capacity. It would be quite possible to divide the province into a few farms on which the (ew proprietors could make small fortunes and enjoy in compara- tive solitude .the fruits' of their labors. They would necessarily re- quire iew merchants, iew lawyers. few doctors, few schools. Ships from the neighboring provinces could call occasionally, bring their supplies from nbroad, and carry away their surplus products. They would be mon- archs of all they could survey and would (ind ample scope for enjoying themselves in seeing their accumula- tions grow. But, it is unnecessary to add, it would be making poor use ml one of the richest pieces ol land in the world. While the present tendency towards enlarging our farms is not likely to go so far ns this, there is a very ser- ious dangcr that it may be carried to such an excess as to cripple every other business by reducing our popu- lntion to a point at which the carry- ing on of any business other than farming must become unprofitable. The maintenance of our cities and towns, of our schools, our trades- iiicn, our professionals depends upon must lail, if there are few people our schooll. our churches, our professions will starve.
