F. J. Jayne, M. A., Vicar of Leeds and Canon of Ripon, has just been ap- pointed new Bishop of Chester, in the room of the Right Reverend Dr. Stubbs, translated to Oxford. Mr. Jayne is only 42 years of age, and after his consecration he will be the youngest prelate in England. : The ‘ silent Von Moltke” isn't at all silent athome. He is, on the contrary, a charming, lively and amiable companion. He is very fond of the wife of his nephew, who presi s over his household, and of her children. It may not be generally known that Stanley, the great African explorer, has, 48 second in command, Lieut. W. E. Stairs, of the royal engineers, a son of the late Jobn Stairs, of Halifax. Lieut. Stairs is about 26 years of age; he was educated at the Military College at Kingston, Oat., and was seleeted for tie pesitiog from over 250 applicants.
