PAGE SIX "tau: GUARDIAN, Cl-IXRLOPTETOWN JANUARY 30, 1950 Looking hack over Friday night's exhibition hockey clash between Prince of Wales College and King's University of Halifax. we don't think it would be wrong in saying that the Wclshmen turned in their best performance of the sea- son in garnering their 5-2 victory over the visiting hockeylsts. O O O Skating at tap speed every min- minute of the game, except for the opening two minutes of the first period when the Halifax boys got the jump on them to bang in their only two goals of the game. the Welshmen forced the attack In be- hind their opponent-s blueline and kept it there most of the time in a smart system of forcing tactics. They threw rubber right and left at goalie Fraser, who coming up with a. masterful performance be- tween the pipes, was the only real stumbling block to the goal-hungry Welshmen. O O O The locals not only showed up well in their forward attack, but came uip with smart, effective backchecking tactics as well, and ovcrskated breaking Halifax for- wards time and time again that foiled what otherwise might have been good scoring attacks, but ended up in being skated off to the corner or brought up short at the defence without any harm being done. O O O Although not: having nearly as much rubber to turn aside as his opposing counterpart, goalie Eddie Lund also stood out for his iper- formance. particularly in (the mid- die canto when the play was on more even tci-ms, with the visitors matching break for break with the locals only to be robbed by a. nium- ber of good scoring chances by smart saves on the part of the youthful P.W.C. not custodian. O O O Also competing agalnist a Main- land team the same night, the Saint Dunstan‘s University Inter- collegiate team didn't fare out as well as did their student brothers the Welshman when they inst cut to Mount Allison University alt Saekville by an 8-3 count in the opening game of the N B.-P.E,I. Intercollegiate Hockey Champion- ship series there O O O It was a tough start for Saints, and their loss mean-t much more to them ‘than did the victory for the Welshman. as it puts them a gaime down in the home and home series which they are competlting in against Mount A and the Uni- versity of New Brunswick for the two-Province title. O However. the Saints still have three games to play in the series with two of than on home ice, and unless the other teams in the series are very much better than the saints. you can depend that they will still be a ‘team to contend with before the schedule winds up, as they are noted for their fight- ing spirit when the chips are down, as many a Mainland team has found out from past experience. O O O Getting away from hockey for the moment. basketball had s. full week-end here with double bills bEing run oft hi both Island and Ci-ty Juvenile hoop leagues during Saturday at the P.W.C. auditor- tum. O O O In I.P.F.B L. competition. the Summersidc R.C.A.F. huupsters maintained their first place leader- ship in the standing by sending the Saint Dunstarfs cagemen down to a 52-38 defeat in the second game of the double bill. In the first game Rays Millionaires broke a second place deadlock with Army to ta-ke over sole possession ctf that spot and remain two points behind the league leaders by trouncing the Prince of Wales quinitette by a. 66-48 count. The defeats for the two collage teams left tho Saints and P.W C. in fourth and fifth place respectively. O O O The Juvenile Saint Dunstaris cagemen did better than their senior brothers when they hand- ed out a 43-19 shellacking to the Y.M.C A. hoopsters to hold on to their league leadership in City Juvenile competition and chalk up their third victory in as marry starts. The Juvenile Victorian also came through on the winning side to break up-s. four-way ti; for sec- ond place by soorlni a 48-91 vic- tory over the Abbie: to take over Sole possession two points behind Saints. The losses for Abblea and Y.M.C.A. left them in l. three- comered tie for third place with the Ramblers who remained idle on Saturday. ‘ Southport VS. Souris Thu Soutliport.
