The Grand Trunk Pacific agreement as amended in favor of the Company passed the House of Commons on Thursday morning by a vote of 116 to 61, a majority of55for the Government, The debate had been prolonged until it had become wearisome, although it was enllvened somewhat hyavigorous closing speech from Sir Wilfred Laurier. The vote appears to have been strictly a party one. There is very little of independence in the Canadian Parliament and there is little doubt that the measure will pass the Senate as it has| passed the Commons, without material change. Very probably it will be found inot so injurious an agreement as the Opposition have represented it to be, l nor so desirable as has been held io be on the Government side. But had it been amuah worse measure than it is the party majority would still, no doubt, have adopted it. Attorney General Pugsley has had a cable despatch from England informing I him that the appeal of New Brunswick to ` the Privy Council in their representation case will be argued lu June or July. Following the fire nn insurance rates has been rf-solved upon by the underwriters. It is a double disaster where eight or ten millions in fire losses in the rate cf insurance. There is some discussion in American popersover the subject of “left-earedness" which is said to result from frequent use ofthe telephone. As every one knows, nine persons out of' ten in using the tele- phone hold the receiver to the ,left ear. This may be from choice, or because the instruments are so made as to make it ` more convenient to use the left ear and leave the right hand free to make notes of the conversation, if necessary. But the controversy is apart from this. One contention is that the use of the phone, tends to dull the hearing in the left ear. The American Telephone Journal claims that it improves the hearing and that people arc becoming “left-eared" in the way of hearing better with the left than with the right ear. A fair test is to hold the receiver to the right ear once in a while and note the difference. Wear ‘these successive rit’acks must bc attribut- . . ii Everything here to lighten your labor. H. & H.
