It is liberally en dowed out of the Irish Charch sarplus, and authorities have already bes:owed a } its number of scolarships, exhibitions, i i large and prizes upon the more distinguishs candidates at the first matriculation and di gree eXaminations, The man object of the institution is to meet the long-standing com plaint of the Irish Roman Catholics as _to the obstacles in the way of their obtaining academical degrees. ‘The very large num- ber (1,515) of candidates at the examinations goes to show that the University wiil fill a gap in educational remuiquents. The Conservatives have secured the last three elections in Enzland. At Presion and Cambridge University the change is not very great, but at Salisbury, Mr. Greenfell, a” wealthy young Liberal, was ejected from the seat for which he sought re-election He was elected in 1580 by a majority of 120 ina total poll of 1,802. At the election the other day, Mr. Kennard, the Conserv- ative whom Mr. Greenfeil defeated two years ago, was again a candidate, and de- feated his Liberal opponent by 103 ma- jority in a total of 1,807, a Liberal loss of 223. Some evenings ago, during a lecture at Laval University by Dr. Verge, one of the professors, the gas was suddenly turned off. Considerable confusion ensued, during which some one got a lamp and attempted to light it, but it was kicked over, and the students finally issued ont of the hall ina body, and marched around tke ramparts | with a torch-bearer at their head, singing ** La Marseillaise.” The gas incident was repeated at the lectures during the follow- ing evenings, when the authorities deter mined to put a stop to this state of affairs, and called in the service of five policemen, who were posted around the gas meter and watched the students home. They have been since permanently stationed to watch the gas meter. Eleven of the students were promptly suspended, pending an investiga- tion, which resulted in the expulsion of three of their number, bat they have since all been forgiven with the exception of one young man, who is still out in the cold. _—o- ae +e oe ~ « The Great French Remedy, Dr. LeDuc’s Periodical Pills.
