2 ETE eee é - ‘ A The Clergyman. The clergyman, children, is prebably the most curious specimen in eur col- lection. His whole business consists in an eudeavor to make men goed, net) thinking, apparentiy, that if all were geed he would have te go out of busi- Less. The clergyman has other duties, such for instance, as engineering fairs, mak ing oyster stews and lemonade, and cur- ing love-sick peeple by joining them in marriage. A clergyman is alse expected to make the reunds of his parish weekly. is nota very enormous task. not take ail ef his time. hours each week fer sermon writing and sleep As the flock sleep while the clergy- man is preparing kis sermon, they think it no more than fair that they should sleep while he is reading it. It must be said, however, to It dees tue credit ef the ladies, thas they seldom go to sleep inchurch. They goneralls keep their eyes open during the service. New bonnets are worn to church. The clergyman is paid for praying for people whe would never think of} praying for themeelves. They know how much praying for they need, prob- ably, and shrink from undertaking the task. The clergymanis suppesed to know everything, and yet everybodyin the} cougregation thinks he knows more thas the clergyman. Ifthe clergyman sticks to religien, pure and simple, the congregation cem- | plain that he gives them nothing aoew ; if he touches upen living questiens, they accuse him of preaching politics. If the clergyman does not visit his parishioners every be is a very poer his visita regularly, soon discover that he is a very peor preacher. If he extemperizes, they cermplain that his diseourse is rambling; if he preaches from notes, they say any feol ean do that. thaw Lal’ If w» clergyman says but little at a funeral, he ia called unsympathetic; if he says much, he is accused of gushing. The clergyman is the last persea many a man weuld help support, and| he is the last many ask afavoref. He is not called in till the funeral is aps pointed. A man whe never helped te pay the clergyman while alive canvot be expee-| 4. ted to give him anything when dead. S ‘ 6 It a clergyman does net keep abreast | ef the literature ef the day, the cengre- gatien say he is behisd the time; if he gives them an epitome of the best thoughts ef the best writers, they accuse him of plagiarism and stealing. Ifa clergyman preaches short ser-| raons, he ig aceused ef laziness; if he | preaches long sermens, the people rete him tedieus. If he dresses like ether people, his appeareneée is said te be unmizisterial ; if he dresses in sombro black or dens a white choker, he is ehurged with affectation. It he busies himself at the fair and social, it is said that he had better put more time in his sermens; his whele time to his sermons, said to be a poor worker. The clergyman, it is said, lives en the ignoranee of mankind. If this be true, he should have the best of living ; | but a good living is a difficult thing for a clergyman to get. When you grow up, children, if yeu would be rich, you should all be clergy- men; but it weuld be better te try something else first.— Boston Transcript _—em + Seciety Birectory, Charlottetown.
