FEBRUARY 18. 1899. _'I I . i A _ I J THE N~ B ELECTIONS ; The provincial election which takes 'place today in New Brunswick is of imore than ordinary interest to ot-her iprovinces because of two special fea- itures. One of these is that the vot- 'ing today will decide whether pro- lvincial politics in the sister province ,are to be hereafter run on federal lparty lines, or to continue as hereto- §fore in the hands of a coalition of lboth parties. It is the Conservative I party that has raised the issue, and if the opposition wins in the ight it will be, in its general features, a Conser- ‘vative victory. It will not to quite ‘ the same extent be a Liberal victory if the Emmerson government is eus- taincd in the contest, because the gov- ernment of the day is not fighting a Liberal battle. They are contending rather for the co_»tinuance of the :A coalition, or combination system. Another feature of the contest which is of general int :rest is the energy and zeal with which two leading federal r politicians have thrown themselves , into the contest. These are Hon. A. G. Blair, Minister of Railways and Hon. George G. Foster, ex-Finance Minister. They are old-time political opponents, and each is the leading man of his party in the province. The r present local government, though necessarily changed in its personnel by the lapse of time,is the same in pur- pose and general policy as that of which hir. Blair was the leader from . 1883 to 1896, when he transferred the Premiership in order to enter Mr. Laurier’s cabinet. terms to the Commons there. He never sat in the provincial Assembly. , When Kings County became hostile he sought and obtained his election in York, Mr. Bla.ir’s native county. Mr. Blair was long the ,representative of York in the legis- llature but was eventually defeated ‘there and found a new seat in Queens, which he now represents in the Com- ,mons. It can readily be seen that Mr. Blair would gladly drive Mr. Foster out of York, and if report tells truly he has effected a combina- ,tion there which may give the ex- ” Finance l\l'nister much trouble in the future. B -1-h Mr. Blair and Mr. Foster hav- been taking an active part in tim campaign, speaking at public meetings and from the hust- ‘ ings Hon. John Costigan has taken the side of the Emmerson government, but in a. less dernoustrative way than his late ministerial colleague and Mr. Blair. His influence among his Irish and French co-religionists is large, however, and no doubt will consider- ably assist the government in the French-speaking counties as well as in the country generally. But pro- I BI I'-I l-I \ BILOR, Mr. Foster was born in Kings, r county, and was elected for several` r bably nc man, not even the leader of TH E , the government or the leader of the opposition, are fighting harder for .\n l~rdi~peiiilent Journal, untrsininclled any victory “day than Bun- and Foster-_ ‘ cs.:~l.~.~.~;nimiiig to bv - A St-. John correspondent of the Montreal Witness, whose letter shows a fair acquaintance with New Brun- swick po1itics,predicts the return of 13 opposition members. This is, how- ever a more favorable view of the ministerial chances than is generally taken. We hope to be able to chron- icle the result of the election in Mon- r day’s issue. The annual report of the Char- lottetown Board of Trade for 1898 is the best of the series yet made _pub- lic. It includes the valuable report of President Haszard, the names of the otiicial staff and members of the Board, and much statistical and other' information relating to the na.tura.l` resources, the trade, industry, meteor- ology, and the attractions of the pro- vince as a summer resort. The re- port is embellished with a number of illustrations giving views in Char- lottetown and about the Island. Not the least interesting of these are ar number of harvest scenes, of the kind that may make even Manitoba look to its laurels, Its circulation broad- cast inight do much to give outsiders a more appreciative interest in our province and induce tourists to turn their steps this way. The report was printed at the Examiner oliice and is a. creditable piece of work mechanical- ly, as in every other respect. Bishop Perrin, Anglican, of Vic- toria, B. C., is a. strong advocate of the enlargement of womcn’s sphere. During a. recentvisit to Sacramento, Cal., he thus spoke : “The city of Victoria. from which I come, sleepy as it may seem to you.has upon its school board women who are doing excellent work. But the school uoard is not the only field in which wo- man must labor. I am not going to draw a startling picture of society. but if it is to be purged it must be t by the women. None of ns can- say how far our individual influences may reach. How is the'reformeition to be acoomp- l lished ? By noise ? No---but by the lives lived as Christian women should -live them. I can well understand how the tur'noil of an election may create a feeling of nausea, but nevertheless the school board is woma.u’s place. There are many women teachers in the schools. and however well meaning men may be, they cannot attend to the wants of women teachers as women directors can. Woman undoubtedly has s. place on the school `ooards, and even turtherin politics.” The Blrarletietorrrrr Steam iiaiigaiio n Go. V. Pierce, chief consulting physician to the Invalids’ Hotel and Surgical Institute, of Buffalo, N. Y., and sold by all dealers in medicines. All the angers of motherhood and moe! of its pains and discomforts are entirely banished by the use of this rare “Prescrip- tion.” It gives elastic strength and true healthful vitality to the special organs and nerve -centres involved in motherhood. This healthful condition is transmitted to the baby both by the improved quality of the mother’s secreted nourishment and by the child’s increased constitutional vigor. It is a perfect health protector to them both. No other medicine was ever devised by an educated, scientinc, physician for the express purpose of bringing health and strength to the special feminine organs.
