Muriate of ammonia, half a drachm ; laveander water, two drachms, ; distilled water, half a pint; apply with a sponge two or three times a day. Priantr Lice.—A lady correspondent has repeatedly cleared her plants of plant lice, by the use of a teaspoonful of coal oii to a gallon of water, kept mixed by stirring, and applied with a garden syringe, hand broom, or watering pot. Copper IN PickLEs.—There is 4 very simple way of finding out if there is any copper in pickles, Take some of the fluid and put it iu a watch glass. Have a per- fectly clean ueédle, which rub carefally oa a piece of silk to get any of the grease off used in polishing the needle. Put this needle in the fluid, and if there be copper iu the acid solution it will preci- pitate on the steel and redden it. If not seen by the oaked eye, a magnifying glass will show the metalic copper. Some- times copper in the vinegar arises not from the introduction of copper, but be- cause the vinegar kas been boiled in a copper vessel. DANGER Or MovinG InTO Empry Houses —A house while empty becomes a breedero f sickness. The reason is clear ; disuse means the ordinary precautions for cleanliness, want of dusting and scrub- bing, and often also of ventilation; the contents of cisterns, pipes and drains be. come stagnant, while the air in the rooms become impure, a!l ef which is favorable to the processes of putrefuction and the developmeut of the germs of diptheria, typhoid fever, and other zymotie diseasee. Parties moving from the city to the coun~ trv, or from the country to the city, should remember this, and teke care to have a thorough cleaning performed be- fore moving into a house that has been unoccupied for a season. Above all, clean out all rubbish from eellars and closets. Among the disinfectants to be recommended, if their use is deemed ad- visable, carbolic acid is among the best. CucumBer Pickies.—The thing is to make them green, and to do it without introducing any salt of copper. The way to get the colour is to extract it from some vegetable substance. The way I set about making my pickles is as follows :— I have nice small cucumbers picked, which I wash, lay in dishes, and sprinkle them with sult, into which I have ground up a piece ot alum not apy larger than the end of the little finger. After these have remained in the dish for a week, I put them into a stone jar, having wiped them, and on this [ pour boiliog vinegar. When they are filled, I puton top of the jar cabbage leaves, and on that I place a clean stone to keep the pickles down. Tf, after a day or two, wy pickles are not green, I decant the vinegar, make it hot —not on the boil—and repeat the process, with fresh cabbage leaves. If not at the first trial, at the second the pickles have u nice color. Fer seasoning, when I boil my vinegar, for every quart I put in a muslin bag a half ounce of alspice, mace, whole black pepper, and mustard seed. Ask Yourself these Questions. Harpine, Esq., Brockville, Ong. :— Dear Sir—It is now two years since your ‘‘Censtitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced to me, I have waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me to be ‘too good to true,” I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Circular I saw my case described in many par ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit up in the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third. I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head, A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certificate, nusolicited, with leave to make what use of it yon may see proper Yours truly, W. TINDALL, Methodist Minister. - Port Elgin, Ont., Aug. 24, 1878. Ask for Littletield’s Constitutional Catarrh Remedy and take no other. T. J. B. Harvie, Dominion Agent, Brock- ville, Ont.
