LetterS...e To the editor: Once again this year, the Stu- dent Union elections have had a low voter turnout. While. this, in part, can be cred- ited to a lack of interest or awareness on part of the students, fault should also-lie with the faculty. Although professors were requested to ex- cuse students from classes between 10:45 — 12:00 for Stu- dent Union speeches a number of professors felt that they had lost too much time due to storms to grant this. However, professors should be aware that university edu- cation entails not only academic enhancement but. also political and social development. As an example to the stu- dent body, the _ pro- fessors should encour- age the overall develop- ment of students rather than being unduly con- cerned over loss of one class period. Some fault may. also lie with the Student Union which should have en- sured the cancel- lation of classes for the speeches did carry over to Wednesday. (The re- quest had been made for classes to be can- celled on Tuesday but due to the storm day, the speeches were post- poned until Wednes- day.)
