James McCready, one of the largest boot and shoe manufacturers in Canada, died to- day of dropsy, leaving an estate valued at half a million dollars, Weather Bulletin. Toronto, Oct. 9.—10 a. m. Moderate winds, fair, cool weather. . One of the Causes! Sir,—A great deal has been said about the slow progress of the children in the City Schools. One cf the causes is now plain. A leading member of the School Board has written a letter to the Patriot ot yesterday, and appended his signature to it. It was on the trade question, and signed “D. Farquharson.” No one who has listened to Mr. Farquharson speak on that question will be surprised; but that he would sit down aud write such a rigmarole of nonsense is a subject of wonder. He talks as if the Tories of the Dominion made the American tariff. He also says we don’t want to sell to the Americans, who want to buy our cheap goods. Who prevents them from buying ? Mr. Farquharson had better write a letter to Congress, and show them what fools they are. CITIZEN. HOTEL AKRIVALS. HOTEL DAVIES.
