S. D.) "On Wednesday the 29th July, was held according to appoint- ment, the SOURIS FAIR when a. good many people attended, some merely to see the fun, and a few to make It." So a Charlottetown newspaper of one hundred years ago commenced its write-up c-f the first fair field 1n Kaugs County. Fairs have changed since that time, and the continuity has been broken over extended periods, but this first fair may rightly be con- sidered the grandfather of t-he pjrasenl clay Eastern Kings Ex- hibition which is an annual at- tractlon in Souris each autumn. The exhibition Idea. got It: orl- gfnal Impetus at. a meeting held a1: Sourls West on the 19th Febr- uary 1840, when the Sourls Farm- ing Club wns formed for "the im- provement. of Husbandry and Agri- culture. und by experiments and discussions to 11nd out the kind of seed: best adapted to the sofl of this Island, and to arrfve at the best. mode o! cultivating same .. Thus was the Idea of an exhibition or faIr ivrittcn directly into the constltutlonpf the Sourls Farming Club. I I I I The executive for tho first year utere: Alex. It was to be mainly a show of live stock, and. modelled tm the Fairs in the old country, it: was to ibe an occasfon for either horse trading buying a new cow, or sell- 1115! some lambs. ‘There were no buildings to provide, no tickets m print, no prizes to offcr.
