all trot and pace. one mile heats $200
purse. The matinee races will be held
as formerly during the summer, and a
committee has been appointed to make
negotiations for the use of the track.

stated I have nothing to say against
the Shorthorn as a superior beef anim-
al. l think the present craze for what
is termed the dairy or dual purpose
Shorthorn to use on godd dairy grades
is a regrettable one._aud will lsurl the
people trying it where they began.
l have heard it claimed thai. some
of the dairy breeds are 'what is termed
“hard to feed." This is not borne out
in fact. Many experiments have been
conducted in Government stations
with aeveraiol .the different breeds
from caifhood up to aigiahed age for
the block.=und'wh_ile‘ t ‘weight and
quality ofbeef varied, eatly, the cost
per pound was very close 'ln allcaacs.
I have never atleast seen one instance
where any l.ireei1'inaii_e cheaper gain
in weight for a. given polmd than Hols-
tein youngsters did and there is little
in this "hard to feed" "ob__lection. If
you don't intend to feed- generously
keep the old P. E. l. shrub; she will
stand starvation better 'Chan any
known breed ‘but don‘t jump readily
from Une pure breed to' another if_you
wish to make any real progress in
dairy breeding. und keep in mind that
in the ofiicial yearly testing of the dif-
ferent flalrv breeds this fact has in-
variably been brought out, that the
heaviest milkors of any breed are its
most "economical" producers or other
things being -equal the ‘cow that gives
the heaviest now of milk in it year pro-
duces the cheapest milk. Big milkers
command big prices.
