S1x,—I notice in the Patriot of the 3rd inot., a report of the Road Surveyors’ con- vention which took place In the Provincial Library, Charlottetewn, on Wednesday, the 28th ult. This report gives a synopsis of the opinions of the several supervisors throughout the country regarding the best system of road-making, bridge-repairing, etc., etc. Many wise suggestions were brought forward on this subject. They all agreed that the road eee recently brought into use by the present Govern- ment is an important factor in executing the work on the public roads. Mr. James D. Dewar, supervisor of District No. 8, King's Co., said that it worked well, but that he experienced some difficulty in get- ting men to work it’ Mr. John S. Mac- donald said that he could run_ the machine himself without employing any men. Would it not be well for Mr. Dewar to adopt Mr. Macdonald’s plan, thus overcoming the difficulty which he hitherto experienced? If Mr. Macdonald could work it himself why did he employ some twenty men, together with five teams of horses, for five days in performing the work on the Anderson Road? He also says that the machine would do as much work in 8 hours as 100 men—quite a compliment to the 20 sturdy laborers whom he had emp!oyed on the above named road. this road, two men were required te drive the horses, six to sit on top for the porpose of steadying it, two of whom were Mr. Macs donald and his colleague, Mr, S. C. Clark, of Mount Stewart. Now, we would wish to know from Mr. Macdonald how he is going to work the machine himself, Further, he says that the more roads ace trenched and the deeper, the better. Well, I dare say that were there three or four ditches, each of which would be ten or more feet deep, in one road there would surely bo drainage enough to prevent the roads from being carried away by the rain water.
