Sin,—l observe that Tae Examiner has come tothe opinion that it is advissble to give up breeding the trotter and devote more attention to the thoroughbred and hackney classes, as they are the sort of horses that command a gvod price in the States and elsewhere. It there were some perticent facts given to support this asser tion it would be more worthy of attention In combination sales poor and unsound in- dividuals cf ind ff-rent trotung blood have sold for low figures, and no doubt rightly so. That horsea eleven and twelve years old, of the much abneed trotting class are yet selling for $27,000 and $41,000 would seem to show that the troster ig not 80 worthless as some may think. The late Duke of Marlborough, a short time before his death lass November, wrote an article on ‘*Americin Trotters’’ for the London Live Stock Journal, which may be of value to your many readers. The Duke had traveiled in the Srates and visited the many breeding establish- ments ia Kentucky and other prominent breeding states, and no one who has read his writings from time to time, eon the sub-} ject of the trotter compired with other types of horse can doubt his capsbility to form a correct opinion. As he deals in the article referred to, with the usefulness of the hackney and theruughbred compared with the American trotter, | give below »« few extrac's written by one who kuew well what the hackney is. Perhaps his opinion is of no value, but it is interesting to know what ahigh value a prominent Eaglish breeder placed on our American horse. | forgot to say the Dxke, in opening, p:ys 4 graceful compliment to Leslie E, McLeod, to whose coutributions to the literature of the American trotter he makes a fisttering allusion : “The trotter has, in fact, been bred strictly ‘or utilitarian purposes and the re- sult ia that every animal, almost, carefully bred from good trotting blood, is ef use It hie pace is not sufficient to entiile him te be speeded on the track, he still makes » {net horse tothe business man or farmer who thinks nothing of thirty or forty miles drive over the deep-scil roads of New Eugland and the Weat. The breed is really beyond an Englishman’s experience. he American horse ig universally a light barnes: horse, often small and what we shou!d think under sized, of tight body and wiry limbs, but with ati indefiaite power of staying. The long strided American horse would knock up an English hackney before he had gone teu miles on an American road. Thus the American horse is essentially the more practical «nd useful of the two, and the interesting point to consider is whe’ her this breed of American trotters is lhkely tu prove of value to our English breeders as well as to our English users of the borse in the near future. To show, however, the value which attaches to the trotting blood in America, it is imteresting to notice that the prices which are given for e:allions aod wares vf fashionable trotting breeds in America stil: exceed the prices which are paid for flu. racing thoroughbreds No doubt th. reason for this is the greater atility of the trotter than of the race horse (tnorough- bred). A thoroughbred that is no good von the turf is only fic to be shot, whereas a trotting stallion or mare cannot be withou value vuder any circumstances. It is quite impossibie that so important a breed of aniina!s as these trotters could exist and become kuown without Englstmen wish ing to possess sires and dams of this breed A mure absvlutely use'ess animal at pre sent than tke su-calied Kuglish hackney iv wou'd be imp ssible ts conceive, and nothing bat the craze of fashion weuld have ever produced @ desire among many p » ple to breed this clasa vf horse. The heckuey is also completely devoid of stamina, ano shuts up as svon as he has gone » short distance ; his action is short, and he repre- sents the peculiar vice of Eoglish breedere, which is the crestion of » showy action vo! the park hack typ>, withvut hiving soy freedom of | mb or length of stride. The dsy wili undoubtedly come when the American trotter will be prized and valued io this couctry (Ragland) for bis astouish- ing qualities, among which soandness <a i : imb and feet, as weil as docili'y, is not one = = = of the least ; and while on this point of locility, itis important to state that the American horse is probably one of the most docile aniwials ia the world,’ Space forbids further quotations from the Duke's article, It may s fely be assumed he was fully informed, und if he had any pre jud- ive at al] it would be in tavor of the Eng ish breed. As to the prices at which trotting stock sells in New York, I might reter to the é+le of the Corbett consignment of the get of Gay and Sable Wiikes in the mouth of Januiry. Sixy nine head etd for a tutal of $105 510 ~an ave erage of $1,529 Among the sixty uine were hirty two uadeveloped yearlings, whioh real zed $20,035 ~an average of $626; eleven no developed two-vear-olds whica brought $8 523 sn average of $775; and seven three-year-vids (s!80 undeveloped) sol | for $6 9)0—as average £$985 70. Teese prices cannot be said to be poor at the auction b ock. The Spirit of th: Times commenting on the sale said: ** Phe strength of the New York market in its ahil- ity and capacity to absorb sto k at sound re- munerative prices never had aseverer test, and it came out triamphant.” SHawMUT News Notes. The New York Legislature has a bil before it which proposes to puvish persone forming combines to prevent competitions by fiuing them $5000. New York cranks sili be rightly estimated by the Libera tegislators of Nova Scotia. These patriotix Soles make epecial laws tu enable combines to do their work. The latest from Ireland is that Uleter will be able to put 50,000 men in the field ainst the Homs Raie forees, that the sul- fiers of the regular army wll refuse t& gainst the riven North, and that to carry out his law Mr. Gladstone will be forred to alist and army of Fenians io the United States, who will become the easy and pro- per mincemeat of the rebellious Icyalists. 4mid the turmoil of the sivuxtion it can be easily perovived that power of picturesque magination 1s not dyingin the people of he Green Isle. Sir Oliver Mowatt hes been receiving a de putation of Toronto Liberals who complain that the Ontario franchise law is defective A a rule uoderi:s operation when elections ar held the lists are generally a year old. Gladstone “as visited a few days ago by a delegstion from Belfast, who spoke in depre ciation of the proposition to establish a separ ate jegisiature in Ireland. Gladstope, in re ply, disputed the allegation that a historica) jealousy existed between the members of different religions in Leland, and he denied that racial divisions would prevail under one iocal government. He referred to the Domin ion of Canada aa an instence of the existence: of racial divi: ion ind: fioitely sha per than that in Ireland. Then, too, there had been similar gloomy prophecies when a united autonomour system of government was proposed, but Can- ada, never: keless, was contented and prosp: r- nus. The Nord-Deutche Al'egmeine Z-itung. the organ of Chancellor von Osprivi, con- tains a atrong leader concerning the treat- ment of German newsp:spers correspon- dents by the French Government. The mobbing of Otto Brandes's family in Paris is the text from which the article is written. Phe object of the French Government in its unjustifiable proceedings ag unst German correspondents, says the p»p-r, is to divert public attention from the Psapama scandal and = =to direct the passions of the French people against foreigners. After enumerating the Germans who have suf. fered trom this policy, the writer con- continues thus: “Ic undoubtedly is the good right of the French Government to expel every obxoxiwus foreigner from the country without assigning any reason. We do not dispute this nght, but we say that an sppeal to popular hatred is always a danger- ous weapon and that if this weapen be drawn against the Germans in France to sssist the Government in escaping the con sequences of the Panama and ot her scandals it will have the results which it ie not d fficult to estimate. We shall know what is to be expected when the French Government finds it necessary to surmour t still more serious d fiicnities by the present ones by diversions § against foreign cvuntries.” Ose Nineteen Boxes.
