Very many of the new shirt waists in lawn, batiste, linen, chambray, etc., are still made with starched collars and cuffs. Very coal and attractive is a grass linen gown made up over apple green satin, the upper and under skirts joined at the waist only by one belt. Some of the new dress skirts have a ver- | tical or otherwise circular trimming car- ried from the waist downward tothe depth of half a yard or sa. Bertbas and Marie Antoinette fichus of silk muslin, with plaited frills of the same, one falling partly over the other, are always useful in imparting a fresh, dainty effect to a gown at small expense. Green in endless shades is used on sum- mer toilets both for linings under trans- parents and for entire toilets, foundations under short cape¥ of chiffon, silk muslin, grenadine, etc., and in millinery the color is used to excess. The checked, brocaded, striped and bar- red silk and wool materials imported this season are suitable for any ordinary occa- sion, and if tailor made and stylishly trimmed they form elegant church, visit- ing and carriage costumes. Very bewitching above young and pi- quant faces look the Victorian poke bonnets tied under the chin with strings of airy net or gauze, the bonnets trimmed wkh ribbons, large paste buckles and com- pact clusters of flowers and foliage. Chine effects are still the keynote of very many elegant and pretty fancies in the world of dress, the patterns appearing among silks, satins, muslins and silk and wool fabrics, and instead of the crisp frou frouish taifeta silk dress lining pretty chine brocades are inuch used.—New York Post. THE PASSING SHOW. With 356 congressmen drawing $5,000 per annum and ‘‘perks’’ and nothing to do this talk of hard thmes appears ridicu- lous.— Washington Post. A mosquito bite is an accident. This the court of appeals in Kentucky decides. It has been popularly supposed to be an incident, except in New Jersey, where it is a crime.— Hartford Post. Pullman palace car porters are said to be complaining of the fact that travelers have quit tipping them. In these times of merciless competition, no quarter seems to be the prevailing rule.—St. Louis Re- public. Four field guns have been stolen from under the noses of West Point sentinels. Worfldn’t it be advisable to turn a search- light on that institution? Something else may be missing—discipline, for instance. —St. Louis Republic. There are now in process of building for the British navy 89 vessels, for the French 83, for the Russian 39, for the German 19 and for the Italian 13. Peace seems to be making rather more progress as a senti- ment than asa hard fact.—Boston Glebe. A self respecting camel that had been imported for a Streets of Cairo show at Coney Island broke away as soon as it saw the place to which it had been taken and kicked down several stalls. These Moslem camels take their religion very seriously. — Buffalo Enquirer. , There has of late been an epidemic of presentation of American ladies to the queen of England. So many have been introduced that not half of them can ex- pect the queen to recognize them wham she meets them on the Strand or at the bar- gain countess. —Cincinnet) Enquirer. ~ ee Srna aneaieeatibltiaiaaita A medium sized; active male is twice as valuable for breeding as one that is large and heavy. Keep a supply of ground bone and crushed oyster shells in a place where the fowls can help themselves. When eggs alone are wanted, the Leg- horns are bard to excel. They are persist- ent layers and are nonsitters. The Wyandottes are desirable market fowls. They have yellow legs and yellow flesh, both desirable market qualities. Young poultry of no kind should be al- lowed free range until reasonably well feathered, as running in wet grass is very unhealthy. The time of hatching more than the breed regulates laying. Early hatched pullets make winter layers; late hatched ones summer layers. Do not confine young turkeys any long- er than is necessary. They will keep healthier and grow faster if allowed free range.—5t. Louis Republic. SIMPLE SALVE. A plaster of tallow and soap will, it is said, reduce the swelling and relieve the pain of a bunion. For a nervous headache drink a cup of moderately strong tea in which two or three slices of lemon have been infused. For binding up cuts and wounds always use linen, not cotton, as the fibers of cot- ton are flat and apt toirritate a sore place, while those of linen are perfectly rounded. For tired feet put a handful of common salt into four quarts of hot water. Place the feet in the water while it is hot as it can be borne. ‘Then rub the feet dry with @ rough towel. GLEANINGS. French paupers are provided for by the funds arising from a 10 per cent tax on theater tickets. This tax averages $10,- 000,000 a year. A queer Japanese idea is that of the offi- cers who served in the war with China, in petitioning the government to erect a mopument to the memory of the horses that fell in the war. A thermometer was left near a stove in & sleeping room at Dusseldorf recently and the fumes from the mercury poisoned two tuildren so that their lives were saved with difficulty. So says the British Med- ical Journal. RAILWAY TIES. It is stated that every year the nailway servants of Britain get no less than $1,500, - 0U0 in tips from the public. The Manhattan Elevated railroad in New York is now running through trains te Yremont, 11 miles, in 52 minutes; fare, 5 vents.
