Father Burke that the Archbishop has been misunderstood, and eharity demands that we the learned prelate the benefit of Father Burke’s plea in his behalf. Father Burke maintains that the Archbishop referred to and should desiring feeling Favs give : amonget the sheep, can becalied by “a particular marriage,” and that he did not refer to non-Catholic marriages in general, which, when contracted by bap- tized persons, are really sacramental whether they think so or not. We aceept this plea, even thongh it does not ag-ee. logically, with the Archbishop’s declaration that no Catholic can attend or assist in such @ sacramental non-Catholic marriage without rendering himeelf “ guilty of a mortal sin” and “ giving public scandal hefore society.” Perhaps Father Burke will kindly explain away this difficulty, which is, indeed, practically the gist of the whole matter, and the point to which Tue Examryer took exception. It is needless to say that we fully agree with Father Burke’s remerks as to the sanctity of marriage and the importance of maintaining it. The habit of contracting marriages in drawing-roome and other places of c’mmon resort for ordinary purposes is, we think, to be deprecated as tending to lower the public estimation of the sacredness and the inviolability of the marriage tie. The most fitting place for a ceremony of such high importance is surely that in which the people congregate for the purpose of worshipping God; and Protestante as well as Cathclice will do well if they insist that the marriage con- tract shall be made in their places of public worship. If Christiane, in common, were permitted to attend marriages in such places, rejoicing in the happy consumma- tion and praying in common to the common Father of all fora blessing upon it, we think that the fact might be, not denounced asa“crime,” but accepted as practical testimony to the truth of the Psalmist’s words: “ Ob, what a sweet and pleasant plearant thing it is, brethren to dwell together in unity.” _— OO 2 Oo —The claim has been made bv Prof. Robertson and othera who have inspected the meat markets of Great Britain that large quantities of Canadian heef are sold to consumers as “Prime English.” In the North British Agriculturist of Octoher 26th last we see it stated that “The public have no conception of the large amount of foreign meat which is sold even in aome of the best shops in Edinburgh as “Prime Scots.” An extraordinary motor car has been patented in France. It is composed of two large wheels five feet in diameter, mounted on & common axle, the body being between the wheels. The motor revolves at high speed round a vertical axis, and, acting like a gyrescope, keeps the vehicle from tipping over. The steering apparatus is very intricate. The uniform case carried by Gordon Pasha into Lower Egrpt has just been re- eovered, and restored to his family through a nephew, Major Gordon, now stationed at Cairo. It is ia a fair state of preservation but appears to have been used by its Feyy tiaa captors for many purposes, iacluding the carriage of dates or grain. It was found on board a dervieh barge loaded with the women of the Khalifa’s follewers retreating from Berber. elas Oe - eea A lot of high grade jackets ‘at 334 THE DAILY EXAMINER, CHARLOTTETOWN. The imports last year amounted to £69,985, and consisted mainly of clothing, provisions, coal, tobacco, and the other things thata community of about swo thousand British born people would require.
