That more of these lands are not utilized results from the difficulties in transporting to the cities the crops and cittle that could be raised thereon. But these difficulties are year by year teing lessened, and one result is shown in the falling off in the imporis ot wheat flour. For the years ending June 30, 1890 and 1891, the imports were 35,065 and 31,682 barrels respec- tively. Forthe year ending June 30, 1892, the imports amounted to only 19,- 530 barrels, on which the duty paid was $14.648.38. During the latter period there was also imported 18,447 bushels of wheat, duty paid $3,440.49, and bran valued at $18,447 on which the duty maid amounted to 36,800.30 ; altogether £24,889. 12 on the w..eat and its products. ‘Tue Shuswah and Okanagan Railway has opened up a portion of the province very suitable for wheat growing, ‘the average yield being 40 bushels per acre of the finest grade tlour wheat. and? if the available lands in this district only were brought under cultiva- tion all the provincial requirements could be supplied and yet leave a sur- plus for a large export trade, The duty on sheep imported forthe year ending June 30.1892. was $29.306.40, on horne cattle $9,043.30, on butter $9,260, and on bacon and lard together $14,338.66. Tnere is no means of ascertaining tue exact quantities of these etaples that have entered the province from Eastern Canada, «xceplting sheep, but to double the other quantilics as representing re- ceipts from all sourees would bea very low estimate of the imports for home consump ioa duri.g the twelve months referred to, Britisi:n Columbia offers in- ducements to the small farmer rather than to the capitalists who seek a large and unbroken track of land suitable for cultivation. Where one of the latter could make a selection hundreds of the former could tind suitable homesteads, A British subject, or an alien proposing to become a British subjec., can pre-empt 160 acres of land at $1 an acre, but land suitable for farming, within easy reach of the cities, would have to be purchased from present holders at $10 and upward per acre, according to the location and richness of the soi), The opening up of the lands near the cities would be a great benefit to the province, and the email farms, if properly worked, would give highly satisfactory results to the owners. The markets for fresh dairy preduce, poultry, fruit and vege- tables, et>., that could be raised thereon will not be overstocked for some years to come. In the meantime British Columbia will be opened up with rail- ways, and it is quite safe to predict that it will not then import, as it is now doing, agricultural products that could be rai in the province, aggregating in value $15 per capita of the entire population. The province now pays for import duties on agricultural products nearly $200,000 a year.” Soap Bubbles Full ef Gold. Your druggist is honest if when you ask him for a bottle of Scott’s Emulsion he ives you just what you ask for. He Siees this is the best form in which to take cod liver oil. Warp off the cholera by getting your system in healthy working condition. Hawker’s Nerve and Stomach Tonic, with a course also of Hawker’s Pills, will excite every organ of the body to healthy action and afford the surest safeguard against disease. anions The amount of fuel necessary, even witir the improved forms of marine engines at present in use, to drive a iarge vessel through the waves is almost incredible, and with coal at an average price of from three to tour dollars a ton, the ex- pense of an ocean voyage may be ap- preciated. To reduce this serious drain on their financies ship owners have been glad to try almost any expedient that has been brought to their notice. Experi- ments have been made with a view to using petroleum in place of coal, vast improvements have been made in com- oe engines, und many other methods ave been tried and sometimes adopted which have resulted in rendering the steamships of to-day a far swifter and at the same time cheaper mode of convey- ance than ever before. Notwithstanding all this, however, the amount of coal burnt during a voyage is enormous, and the two well-known German lines, the North German Lloyd and the Hamburg- American, whose steamers burn on an average from two hundred and fifty to three hundred tons per day, are mak- ing the experiment of firing up with coal dust. Coal dust is what may be almost called a waste product. Many schemes for utilizing it have been tried, but none of them have proved brilliantly successful. In the present case it 1s proposed to inject the dust into the furnace through a nozzle, as though it were gas or petroleum, and if in this form it will produce as much heat as the more solid forms of coal, a greatend will be gained, for instead of three to four dollars a ton, dust only costs about twenty-five cents. No doubt the share- holders of these co:npanies will be re- joiced if the experiment prove a success, for during the past vear no dividends have been forthcoming, and their joy will be appreciated by all, whether sea- farers or iandlubbers, who have an in- terest at stake in ocean transportation, What a Weary Womau Should Do. What may a weary woman do when evening comes and she feels that she is “nearly dead?’ First, she must get out of her tight clothes and bunch her hair on the top of her head. Then she must bathe her face for five minutes in the hottest water she can bear. Then her neck must be treat- ed to the same process. She will look like a lobster or a beet, but she should refrain from looking at herself. After that she should lie down flat on her back and give herself up to the singlo thought of how heavy she is and how the couch supports her. f she does not fall asleep, as she pro- bably will, she should rise at the end of half an hour of this intellectual enjoy- ment. She will feel ten years younger. Then she will enjoy her evening hours. —New York World. @727,000 for Making a Suit of Clothes.
