A cultured but cranky man, named Davin, gave publicity a few days ago, through the Reginia Leader to a statement that the Hon. Mr, Dewdney had engaged in a specu- lation in land near Regina. It is reported that after reading this statement Mr. Dewdney said : ** He was well acquainted with the man Green referred to in the Leader's para- graph. Green had been strongly recom- mended to him to take charge of som: thoroughbred horses he was sending out to the Northwest. After Green had been out there with the horses some years, and had faithfully discharged his trust, he asked Mr. Dewdney’s advice as to a good loca- tion Mr. Dewdney had heard that the C. P. R. was likely to pass what is now Regina, and strongly counselled his taking up land in that vicinity. Green went there to investigate, and found several squatters there, who all advised him to jvin them in taking up land io that locality. He mentioned Mr. Gore, among others, as a gentleman who had recommended him to setile there. He did so, and is now the owner of land there, the particulars of which can be had at any time by reference to the records of the department Green had made all necessary pat ments and performed all the duties and was in possession to-day, a bona fide settler, The land is near the town site of Regina. ‘‘How much are you interested financially in that land, Mr. Dewduey ?” *“‘Not to the extent of one solitary dollar o: cent,” replied the Minister. ‘‘] am not and never wis. I was only anxious to see Green well settled, as he gave up a good position ia Winnipeg to accompany me to the North- west,” Unless this statement of the Minister of the Interior can be disproved, the charge, about which columns of Grit vituperation have already been expended, falls to the ground. The statement of the Toronto Gidbe that Baroness Macdonald was con- cerned in} the transaction is of course as fasle as it is cowardly. ~ Vice ADMIRALTY Court —The Heather Belle Fastnet case is still before the Court, Mr. Rinkin, of Halifax, took the stand on Saturday evening and his evidence was nut concluded up to recess to-day. Tue Toronto Mail points out that the interest on the cost of the proposed Nor- thumberland Straits tunnel will be $215,- 000 a year; estimates that the recsipts will be about $78,000; and, assumirg that the estimates of expense must, necessarily, be exceeded, annual loss to Canada will be at least $150.- 000. But the Mail leaves out of its account the cost of the Stanley; also the cost of the ice- boat service; also the difference in the earn- draws the conclusion that the ings of the P. E. Island Railway as a result of continuous communication winter and summer. These items have been shown to amount to about $200,000 a year. This amount ought not to be omitted. Give it the proper place in the account, and the M «il will see — assuming that the figures ithas already given are correct —that instead fan annual loss to Canada of $150,000, hers will be an annual gain of $50,000. es France Suspicious. SHE FEARS THAT BRITAIN CONTEMPLATES TAKING POSSESSION OF TANGIEK The troubles in the Tangier district of Morocco and the despatching by the British government of two warships, the Grappler and Thunderer, to protect British interests in Tangier, has awakened a feeling in some French quarters that England has tke in- tention of adding to her territory by the forcible acquisition of a part of the Sultan of Morocco’s dominions. This feeling is not in any degree a!layed by the reports from Tangier, which state that the British minister has warned the governor that if he cannot guarantee the safety of the city agaiust the rebel tribes, sailors will be landed f:em the British warships. This is taken | y alarinists to mean aggressions on the part of the British and the Seicle to-day demands that the government despatch the entire French Mediterranean squadron to Tangier to prevent the British from carrying out any designs of an aggressive character, The Matia says it is rumored that the French Mediterranean fleet has already been despatched to Tangier. e+ ere Canon Farrar on Woman. If it be true that the “corner stone of the Commonwealth is the hearthstone,” how im- portant is the work of every woman, even in that sphere of family lite which many are tempted to despise as too narrow for their energies. Every woman should, indeed, aim at doing good in wider regions of life, and should endeavour by the irresistable force of sweet ard silent infinence, if in no ether way, to raise the whole tone of national thought and conduct, But even if a woman, whether manied or unmarried, be “never heard of half a mile from home,” the purity and loftiness of her ideal, the devoted un- selfishness of her life, may tell with immense and continuous power upon every member of her family. The bright invisible air pro- duces effects more stupendous when no whisper of a breeze isjheard than all the fury of the passing hurricane; and the influence, conscions and unconscious, of thousinds of women, entirely unknown to fame, may g> to the enoblement cf the moral being of genera tions yet unborn. Men are, and ever will be, what their wives and sisters, and above all their mothers, tend to make them, by in- fluence which begins with the cradle and ends oniy with the grave.—Canon Farrar in the January Ladies’ Home Journal. -—=_- - Personal The Czarina is ill and unable to leave her apartments.
