Then the flames took complete possession of the great business establishments and fish warehouses on Water Street, soon ex- tending to the wharves, from which ship- ping had to haul out into the harbor for safety. But lung before this, and while the de- vouring element was rushing with irresist- able fury towards the water front, it was also spreading easterly from its original starting point, and before the pople were hardly aware of it that ma- jestic pile of free stone, with its twin towers, the Oatholic Cathed- ral, was ablaze. This Cathedral was one of the largest and most magnificient places of worship in the New World. With the Cathedral were also destroyed the palace of Bishop Power, containing invaluable trea sures of art, St. Patrick’s Hall and the schools of the Christian Brvthers, and there was little hope of saving the Convent and College of St. Bonaventure. At eight o'clock the operators were driven from the telegraph and cable offices by the flsmes, which soon claimed those buildings for their victims. At that hour over five hundred buildings had been des- troyed, including all the principal struc- tures in the city, and the flsmes were spreading in all directions. THE ENGLISH ELECTIONS.
